2024 GF Media Day: Broadmoor High School (Baton Rouge, LA)

The key point of emphasis for Broadmoor High School for this upcoming season is growth and development. With a 1-9 record from last year, being able to grow and develop the young players to compete for a better record will be the task at hand for Coach Yasin. Two games into their season, they are 1-1, which is already showing signs of growth from last year. Coach Yasin will rely on his key players such as Kenneth Hawkins, Brandon Thomas, and Marcus Raine to set the tempo and tone for this young team.

“We’ve been coming together, conditioning and getting in shape trying to get ready for the season. We feel like our attendance has been really high and we feel like a lot of kids have bought in. We’re looking alright this upcoming year.”

“We were trying to install a few different things and we had a really good spring practices. Unfortunately the weather that came through at the end of May made us cancel our spring game so we didn’t get to test it out against another team. We were looking forward to testing it out as we felt like we made some big improvements and some kids started buying into it so we just wanted to show them that it’ll work in a game.”

“It’s a good thing that I have some of these third year juniors rising and they’re taking over that leadership role. I have some seniors that have been around four years, they’re going to be our key guys who go both ways, but I’m starting to see that these younger guys are taking leadership and ownership of the team. They’re starting to hold each other accountable and they are starting to buy into what we preach and that a big thing that I see going into this third year.”

Marcus Raine will be the tone setter of the defense. His swagger and willingness to hit anybody as described by Coach Yasin will be monumental for the team as they will look up to him as a team leader in the secondary. He has apparently gained 15 pounds over the off season to bulk up his frame and looks to improve from his sophomore season individually where he has 29 solo tackles and and interception.

“We got Marcus Raine in the other room, he brings a little bit of that swagger to the defense. He likes to hit people, he likes to come downhill, and he doesn’t back down from anybody and that’s what we need. He’s made some big jumps in the weight room and put on about 15 pounds this off season.”

Almost every team has that one guy who is just a talented athlete at multiple positions. Kenneth Hawkins is just that for his team. This season, he’s looking to take a move away from quarterback in order for his team to be able to utilize him at both Corner-back and Wide Receiver. The senior has played running back, corner, wide-out, and quarterback in his three seasons on varsity and is constantly looking to contribute to his team’s success.

“We got Kenneth Hawkins, he’s been our Quarterback in the past, an all purpose player. This year, we’re going to try to see if he can play a little more defense and offense and just be on the field the whole time, not just restrict him at that quarterback spot.”

Brandon Thomas will be the X-Factor of this years season. If he is able to adjust to this level and make the defenses respect his talents, then the offense could look very different from the last few years. According to Coach Yasin, he has shown them enough growth over the last year to give them the reason to believe that he is more than capable of leading this team to victories this season. His devotion to the program and him being able to buy in is crucial for a quarterback.

“We have Brandon Thomas, whose going to be stepping up and taking over that full role as a quarterback. They(him and Kenneth Hawkins) went about 50-50 last year and played at different points of the year. But this year, Brandon’s really been in that playbook, he’s really been buying in with us and I feel like we feel good moving forward with him and freeing up KJ to be that all purpose athlete he needs to be.”

Schedule for the Broadmoor Bucs according to geauxpreps.com

“We’re going to be running a hybrid kind of offense. We’re going to be kind of all over the place, y’all just have to come out and check us out when you see us in the fall. We definitely want to want to establish the run, this year we want to play that Buc football, that pounding football. We know that for us to be able to throw the ball, we need to be able to establish the run and read the box as the box loaded then we can be where we feel comfortable getting that ball out there. If they don’t want to respect the box then we’ll also feel comfortable running down somebodies throat.”

“We’re running that 4-2-5 right now and been looking at a lot of that. We have a little battle going on a linebacker right now so we’ve been looking at maybe bringing in another one in there like 4-4-4 box so we’ve been looking at fronts right now. We feel really good about our secondary, we have the depth right now at linebacker, we just have to figure out who’s going to be the starting guys. We have a lot of guys competing against each other which is a good thing. Some of them are starting to rise to the top so we’ll see.”

The Broadmoor Bucs are looking for growth from a 1-9 season from last year. Realistically, a great playoff worthy record won’t just happen overnight. However, Coach Yasin is putting in the right schemes for these players and is setting a culture that allows them to buy in as a whole collective. The youth on this team has potential to be notable together and the community is eager to see if they will reach that.
