Oklahoma Defeats LSU 17-13 To Clinch College Football Playoff Spot

The LSU Tigers took their best shot at the #8 ranked Oklahoma Sooners for their first ever trip to Norman, Oklahoma, but their shot wasn’t enough as the Sooners found a way to secure their spot in the College Football Playoff with a 17-13 win.

“Hard to kill. Nobody deserved to lose that. LSU really fought tonight, but man, I am proud of our guys. We overcame a lot of mistakes, penalties, turnovers, a lot of miscues today, but we are a pretty good football team if we can overcome all of that.”

It was a frustrating game all night long for Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, who was picked off three times, but ended up throwing the game winning touchdown to a wide-open Isaiah Sategna for a 58 yard score with four minutes remaining in the ball game along with a 45 yard touchdown throw on a screen to Deion Burks to tie the game at 10.

The LSU defense did their best to keep the Tigers in the football game as Oklahoma converted 4/16 attempts on third and fourth down. There were also the three interceptions from Harold Perkins Jr., AJ Haulcy, and DJ Pickett, but only one of those interceptions led to any score and it was Haulcy’s. That led to the only LSU touchdown of the game, which was a one-yard touchdown pass from Michael Van Buren Jr. to Zavion Thomas to give the Tigers a 10-3 lead.

What was a big missed opportunity early in the game loomed large and it was LSU’s inability to cash the ball in the end zone after Harold Perkins’ interception return. The very next play after the Perkins pick, Van Buren threw an interception right back to give the Sooners the ball back early in the first quarter.

With the game being deadlocked at 3 in the first half, LSU led for the majority of the second half until the late touchdown from Oklahoma. After only scoring 13 points against Western Kentucky last week, the Tigers matched that total tonight as the offense struggled once again by only accounting for 198 total yards and nine first downs.

Eagerly waiting for the Lane Kiffin announcement on if he is staying at Ole Miss or heading to LSU, the Tigers’ end the regular season without scoring more than 25 points against any DI team this season.
