DITR: Bra’jon Melancon North Iberville (Rosedale, LA)

Meet Diamond in the Rough Bra’jon Melancon the 6’2 160lb receiver/defensive back out of North Iberville. Firstly, Bra’jon is one of our speediest Diamonds in the Rough clocking in at a speeding 4.42 40 yard dash time. This makes him a great target for screen passes and deep throws where he can use his speed to beat defenders to a spot. Alongside this speed Bra’jon also has a 38 inch vertical that makes him even deadlier in deep ball situations as the quarterback can throw the ball somewhere that only he has the athletic ability to reach. Bra’jon uses these talents on the defensive side as well where he has shown good coverage and a knack for physicality. Bra’jon has been a large part of North Iberville’s success with their undefeated 7-0 record, especially in the game against St. John where he had 131 receiving yards and 4 total touchdowns with one of them being a pick-six. The current junior hopes to continue this success and finish the season with 1000 receiving yards and 6 interceptions with a state title to boot.

Here’s my interview with Bra’jon!

What got you into football?

I started playing football when I was 5 years old. I seen my big brother watching Cam Newton and Odell Beckham play and ever since then I fell in love with the game.

Was there a certain play or moment that got you into your position?

I think I’ve always wanted to play receiver because of guys like Odell. Just watching that one-handed catch always made me want to play receiver. And then when I started playing high school one of my coaches asked me to try out corner and I fell in love with it too so I just, started playing both ways and fell in love with them both.

Was there a player you tried to emulate on both sides of the ball?

On the defensive side of the ball I try to be like Darrelle Revis. We play a lot of single high so I’m on an island a lot of the time. And offensively I would say like Julio Jones since we’re both tall and lanky.

Dream NFL teammate?

I’m a patriots fan so I’ll say Drake Maye. He’s lighting it up, and he just broke one of Tom Brady’s records for completion percentage in a game so I’d say him.

Who would you compare your playstyle to?

I’d say Travis Hunter cause he plays both sides of the ball and he does it at an elite level. And he’s not a selfish guy, he’s gonna go out and block and do what he needs to do for his team to win and I feel like that’s the type of player I am. I feel like I’m still a threat even when the ball is not in my hands.

What is your strongest attribute on the football field?

I would say my length and my speed. [I’m] Tall 6’2 with a long wingspan, my length allows me to get my hands on receivers and go up and get jump balls. And I feel like I’ve got above average speed, pretty fast.

What differentiates you from the rest?

I’ll say my mentality. I’m a leader, I go in there to go to war every time and execute the gameplan and lead my guys to a victory. Not even nothing physical just the mental aspect of it.

Dream college?

My dream college is LSU. You know I’m from the Baton Rouge area and the SEC is the toughest conference to play in so I want to play against the best of the best.

Favorite football move to hit somebody with?

I just like being one-on-one on a island offensively or defensively. I like to battle with the guy I’m going against and see who puts in the most work.

What’s an underappreciated part of football?

Receivers blocking. Usually you don’t see people give credit for receivers blocking and I feel like that’s a great aspect of my game as well.

Favorite football movie?

Remember the Titans. Those guys didn’t like each other too much but they bonded over football. It shows how powerful football can really be in someone’s life as it’s been in mine.
