For the second year in a row, the Jewel Sumner Cowboys and Franklinton Demons found themselves playing extra periods, but this time around, it was the Cowboys that got revenge on the Demons 21-14 after losing last season 42-39.

“Last year, it was just like this. We go into overtime and we thought we let it slip away last year. Our goal was to get back to this point and we go into overtime this year and the kids really wanted it. We stepped up and came out victorious.”

The Cowboys started the game hot offensively in playing keep away from an explosive Franklinton Demons offense that put over 40 points on the Cowboys last season. The Cowboys chewed up half the first quarter on the opening drive and cashed in on a 16 yard touchdown run from Jamohn Dyson. Jewel Sumner’s smash mouth offensive attack was able to get another touchdown from Brennen Brumfield to give the away team a 14-0 advantage.

“Going into the game, our goal was to keep the ball away from them. That’s a very good ball club. The quarterback is as good as anybody. They have some weapons on the outside in #3 and #1. They can take it to the house on any given play so our goal was to keep them off the field and we executed pretty good most of the night.”

Jamohn “Slicin” Dyson is a two-way standout for the Cowboys not only as a running back, but a linebacker as well. The Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game invitee played like a star for the Cowboys as he accounted for 121 of the team’s 253 yards. He and fellow running back Jeremiah Brooks create a nice 1-2 punch in the backfield, but for Dyson, he quickly recognizes that it is his offensive line that allows them to do the dirty work.

“We couldn’t do it without our linemen. Our linemen work really hard and they work hard on the field and in the weight room. Without them, we couldn’t do what we do.”

As Coach Currier mentioned, the Franklinton Demons did not go away. After being up by 14, the Demons’ offense was able to strike. Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game QB invitee Jacob Crain responded by connecting often with his top receiver Damikies McClain and also finding his tight end Dalton Freeman for not one, but two touchdowns to tie the game at 14 a piece.

Both Franklinton and Jewel Sumner had chances late in the game to get the go ahead score, but were not able to do so. The Cowboys got the advantage heading into the overtime period as the Demons had to play their talented wide receiver Jayden Burkhalter at quarterback with Crain injuring his thumb on his throwing hand late in the game.

The Cowboys got the ball first in overtime and on fourth down and goal at the one yard line, the offense went to their bread and butter, which is pounding the football up the middle with 6’4 quarterback Eli Neyland getting the quarterback sneak to get the 21-14 advantage in overtime.

All the Cowboys needed was a stop and their defense was able to rise to the occasion in forcing an incomplete pass in the end zone from Burkhalter intended for McClain. It was another thrilling finish between these two programs that are coming off deep playoff runs last season.

It was last year that Franklinton Head Coach Nick Saltaformaggio praised his team for the win and making his case for his team to be number one in the power rankings. This year, it is Jewel Sumner’s head coach Ross Currier that is bullish on his team.

“Our kids keep getting better every day. Every week, we are trying to get a little bit better. I feel like each week, we have gotten a little bit better. We are a long way away. I know we are ranked #1, but we still got to get better. The team we got, they are hungry and I am very proud of these guys.”

“We have the potential to go all the way. We just got to keep going hard in practice. No playing around and we can win a lot of games.”

The Jewel Sumner Cowboys will look to keep their undefeated record alive next week against Springfield. Meanwhile, the Franklinton Demons fall to 3-2 this season and hope to get some good news about their star quarterback Jacob Crain as Coach Saltaformaggio’s team heads into a much-needed bye week this upcoming week.
