For today’s LSU Football Practice Report, the Tigers had a light practice for the whole time indoors.
Today, we got an extended look at Michael Van Buren, who took the first team reps today. Garrett Nussmeier was at practice, but had a light day giving an opportunity for Van Buren to see what he can do. During 7v7 action, Van Buren looked sharp throwing only two interceptions and throwing a couple of touchdown passes to Bauer Sharp, Trey’Dez Green, and Caden Durham.
The wide receivers were wearing shoulder pads and we got to see a lot of 1v1 competition throughout practice first from around midfield and second in the red zone. The star of the show today was Barion Brown, who made a great case today to be in contention for being WR1. The Kentucky transfer had a deep touchdown catch over Mansoor Delane, a touchdown catch near the back of the end zone, and finally, a spinning catch in mid-air near the sidelines. Almost every time we have been out there, we see a big time play from a wide receiver being made and today, it was not only Brown, but a couple of other players. Jelani Watkins showcased his speed by tracking down a pass which looked like it was going to be overthrown. That play was a perfect display of why Watkins’ speed could be dangerous. Aaron Anderson also burned Tamarcus Cooley on a go route for a deep touchdown.
Cooley bounced back later on by getting an interception on defense. PJ Woodland looked strong breaking up a pass on Nick Anderson and Zavion Thomas. In red zone 1v1s, Zavion Thomas got a foot down in the end zone for a score and Trey’Dez Green beats Harold Perkins for a touchdown as well. AJ Haulcy broke up a pass on Bauer Sharp in the red zone. Finally, Phillip Wright had a nice sequence with a couple of catches including burning Jacob Bradford on a route for a touchdown in the red zone.
While being at practice, LSU had a special teams period and had the first team offense working a drive with loud music and crowd noise being pumped in. Head Coach Brian Kelly said during the press conference that the Tigers have started preparing for Clemson earlier this week on Tuesday.
Not at practice today was Chris Hilton Jr. and Jardin Gilbert, who both received their college degrees. Whit Weeks was at practice, but did not participate as he was on the sidelines wearing a jersey.
The first team offensive line had Paul Mubenga and DJ Chester rotating at left guard with the rest of the line remained the same as it had been at the beginning. It was also a big day for Tylen Singleton, who received starting reps with the first team defense at linebacker since Weeks was out. Also, defensively, PJ Woodland was getting some first team reps at cornerback.
The next media availability has not been announced yet, but LSU is planning on having a scrimmage tomorrow night at Tiger Stadium to get the team ready for playing at night. For more LSU football practice reports and coverage, make sure to visit us at www.gridironfootballusa.com!
