After not having access to full practice since Tuesday, everybody wanted to know the status of starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. Brian Kelly stated yesterday that Nussmeier was dealing with tendinitis in his knee and that it was not a major injury. The claims were valid as Nussmeier was a full go during practice today and was wearing a compression sleeve/brace on his leg. Nussmeier was 7 for 9 during 7v7 action and during 11v11, showed that he can move on the knee as he broke away from the pocket and scrambled for six yards. He also threw a deep pass to Barion Brown for a big chunk play during the first 11v11 period. For all the fans screaming that the sky is falling in Baton Rouge, it seems that QB1 was just fine today out there at practice.

It was also by far the best practice of fall camp so far for Michael Van Buren. Van Buren threw two touchdowns during the red zone period with both going to the tight ends Bauer Sharp and Trey’Dez Green. He also made some good throws during the last 11v11 period highlighted by a 16 yard completion to Kyle Parker and a 20 yard pass to Barion Brown. Colin Hurley was solid today completing 6 of 10 passes during 7v7 action.

Aaron Anderson was out there wearing a compression sleeve and was out there getting some reps during practice, but did not participate in 1v1s and 7v7s. During 1v1s, Zavion Thomas caught a deep pass from Garrett Nussmeier on Ashton Stamps deep. Trey’Dez Green and Harold Perkins had some good battles with Green winning the battle today catching a back shoulder pass on the Tigers’ linebacker. Perkins would then bounce back with a great breakup on Bauer Sharp. Barion Brown also made an impressive deep catch against good coverage deep down the field. From a consistency standpoint, Chris Hilton Jr. and Kyle Parker were the best in constantly making catches during 7v7 and 1v1.

Virginia Tech transfer Mansoor Delane had a great day from a defensive standpoint. During 1v1s and 7v7, Delane had two interceptions and during a red zone period, he made a great play in run support tackling Ju’Juan Johnson for a three yard loss. Florida transfer Ja’Keem Jackson also had his best practice with a PBU, a nice tackle on Chris Hilton, and also having a tackle for loss as well. PJ Woodland made the biggest waves today with a big hit on Phillip Wright.

Along with a lot of 11v11 and 7v7 action, there was also an extended focus on red zone competition. There were a lot of plays that focused on direct snaps to Ju’Juan Johnson and Caden Durham with Malachi Lane being used as a lead blocker a lot of times. Durham had the only touchdown during red zone for the first team unit with a run. There was also a shovel pass from Nussmeier to Zavion Thomas that scored, but it was called back because of a holding penalty from Trey’Dez Green. Javien Toviano saved another touchdown when he broke up a pass from Nussmeier that was intended by Green.

During the first 11v11 period, CJ Jimcoily made an impressive PBU on Bauer Sharp as he ripped the football away from Sharp as they were falling to the ground. Tylen Singleton ended the practice by making a big hit in the backfield against the second team. On a side note, Keylan Moses got some first team reps at linebacker towards the end of practice, which was interesting.

The second team offensive line struggled today with pre-snap penalties as they were three pre-snap penalties and one holding penalty called on the group today.

Today’s practice concluded the second week of fall practice as there are now three more weeks until the Tigers kickoff against Clemson. LSU is certainly aware of that as during the indoor practice session, the video board was playing highlights of Clemson running out onto the stadium as well as some aerial shots of the stadium.
