Woodlawn Coaches Corner Week 1: University Lab

Last week Hurricane Ida came through South Louisiana causing damage all over the states coast. The people of Louisiana have grown used to rebuilding and restarting after hurricanes but this specific hurricane categorized as the largest hurricane to hit the state in over 50 years. Ida left many parts of the southern Louisiana without electricity, water, gas, food and many other essentials to everyday life. The schools and businesses were shut down as were many of the roads and highways used to get to these places. Some residents of South Louisiana won’t have electricity or running water until next month. On the bright side of Hurricane Ida was that Baton Rouge didn’t sustain as much damage as many other areas in South Louisiana, but hurricane Ida did cause schools and high school football games across south Baton Rouge to be cancelled last week due to the storm.

Woodlawn High School was back on the practice fields yesterday to prepare for a Friday night matchup against cross town foe, University Lab (Baton Rouge, La). After beating another cross town foe in Madison Prep in the jamboree, Coach Marcus Randall looks to build on that and also knock off some of the rust from not having a game last Friday night. Here is my weekly Coaches Corner with HC Marcus Randall, we discussed what he’s looking forward to seeing from his team, the challenges that University Lab presents and much more:

Weekly Standout: Senior Running Back Amani Givens had some nice runs against Madison Prep in the Jamboree and looked really smooth this week in practice in pass catching drills, look for the Panthers to get him involved in the running game and the passing game. Coach also mentioned that all of his skill players on each side of the ball have come back in shape and prepared for U-High after the 10 day layover.

This week’s game will be played at Richard F. Gill Cub Stadium Jeff Boss Field, home of the University Laboratory Cubs.
