This Saturday, the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana (0-6,0-2) will host the Cardinals of Lamar University (3-3,2-0). After a close loss to Incarnate Word last week, the Lions look to rebound with an easier matchup. Still, looking for their first win of 2023, this SLU team has been playing better and better down the stretch and enters this Saturday’s game with a decent shot. Lamar started off 0-3, but has improved to .500 after three straight wins, including a 27-13 victory over Northwestern State at home last Saturday.

Lamar is led by first-year head coach Pete Rossomando, who last served as the OL and interim head coach for UNC-Charlotte. Under center is JUCO transfer Robert Coleman, who has thrown for 1,082, 7 touchdowns, and three interceptions across his six starts so far this season. Leading the rushing attack is Khalan Griffin, a junior and Rice transfer, with 87 carries for 432 yards and 3 touchdowns. Leading the Cardinals in receptions and yards is Andre Dennis, sophomore, with 19 for 283, alongside 2 touchdowns.

On defense, the Cardinals leading tackler is Foday Jalloh, a freshman linebacker and transfer from Eastern Illinois, with 41 tackles, along with 2.5 sacks, third on the team. Jalloh is just half a sack out of tying the team lead, currently shared by Jalen Freeman and Jaymond Jackson. Three Cardinals, those being Kristian Pugh, Kevin Anderson, and Samuel Scaife IV, are tied for first with an interception apiece.

Much of the same can be said for SLU. The gameplan has shifted away from a split two-quarterback system, and Eli Sawyer should see the majority of snaps under center, with Zachary Clement entering for designed quarterback runs and an occasional pass. With the wide receiver and running back rotation, it’s tough to pinpoint exactly who will see the most looks in both of these position groups. On defense, look for the same players who usually make an impact to step up once again. There are not any new, notable injuries to mention heading into this contest.

Kickoff will take place at 3 PM in Hammond. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+, and, as always, the Southeastern Sports Radio Network. This matchup also happens to be the yearly homecoming game.
