This Weekend in Sports : Tulane vs. Memphis

On Friday, October 14th at Yulman Stadium, New Orleans’ own Tulane Green Wave went head-to-head against the Memphis Tigers in an American Athletic Conference showdown.

Memphis received the ball on the first drive and was able to take 60 yards and more than 6 minutes off the clock, but would be stopped at the edge of the red zone by Tulane’s defense to force a field goal. That start helped the defense continue to come away with more defensive stops all the way into the fourth quarter of this game (as well as coming up with a momentous turnover). One of those turnovers was an forced fumble by cornerback Parry Nickerson and was recovered by defensive lineman Ade Aruna.

Aruna was a big force early on in the night, totaling four tackles, two for loss, and one being a quarterback sack. Other notable defensive performances include nose tackle Sean Wilson (3 tackles, 2 sacks). Both defensive tackle Tanzel Smart (7 total tackles, 4 solo) and linebacker Nico Marley put up nearly the same stat line. The only difference between these two during the game was that Nico Marley was able to force an extra fumble that was recovered by Memphis. Also, strong safety Roderic Teamer had a busy night on Friday with six total solo tackles.

Unfortunately, despite good defensive turnout, and two total touchdowns from QB Glen Cuiellette, the Green Wave were unable to notch a win as the Memphis Tigers beat Tulane along the tune of a 24-14 final score.

Tulane now drops to 3-3 on the season and have a 0-2 record in conference play. The team will prepare to face their next opponent, the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes, in Tulsa, Oklahoma at noon on Saturday, October 22nd.
