The Teurlings Catholic Rebels Look To Snap Another Long Winning Streak Tonight Against Westgate

Earlier this season, the Teurlings Catholic Rebels ended the longest winning streak in the state when it snapped a 13 game winning streak by the defending Division III State Champion St. Charles Catholic Comets in a 28-22 win. With other impressive wins against Avoyelles, Notre Dame, Opelousas, and Breaux Bridge, the Rebels are riding a little bit of a winning streak themselves as they enter their week six game undefeated at 5-0.

“We have played with tremendous confidence in all of those games, especially the St. Charles game in which we were down 19-7 at halftime. We were able to outscore them 21-3 in the second half. I think that was a huge confidence builder for us. We’ve never been able to take over a game in the second half like that in the last few years. We’ve been on the other side of that a lot more than being on the winning side in the second half of big games. I felt that it was kind of a turning point for us. I felt like it gave us a lot of confidence. It was really good to see how it feels to be on the other side of that deal.”

In order to keep their undefeated season alive, they must go on the road and try to snap the state’s current longest winning streak, which is held by the Westgate Tigers at 13 games in a row. Knowing that his squad has done this before, Teurlings Catholic head coach Dane Charpentier and the Rebels are trying to accomplish something that is rare to do.

“I love weird statistics, but we may end up being the first school to play two schools with the longest winning streak in the state. We knocked off the first one and now, we got to play the school that took their place.”

Coach Charpentier has been proud of his guys and the way that they approached games every week, but snapping two of the state’s current longest winning streaks is going to be easier said than done when going against one of the top teams in all of the state in the defending Class 4A State Champions that are also coming into this game with a 5-0 record.

Led by head coach Ryan Antoine, the Tigers have not only been winning, but they have been dominant averaging nearly 50 points per game led by QB Amaaz Eugene and RB/WR Dedrick Latulas while only giving up only 12 points per game led by a Texas football commit in the secondary.

“Westgate has elite team speed. That is really the simplest way to put it. Defensively, they are able to erase explosive plays with how much team speed they have. Offensively, they are able to create explosive plays and especially off schedule plays. Some teams, you have to block everything perfectly just to have a chance to make a play. These guys have so much speed that they can turn one of their best plays and turn it into a scramble. They have elite talent and one thing that they do a better job of than most people is they are sure their best players touch the football the most. They put the ball in the right people’s hands. Defensively, they are really disciplined and a big man to man team. They got one of the best players in the state playing safety in Derek Williams (Texas commit) and when you turn on the film, he doesn’t disappoint. He makes a ton of plays for them and he is really physical. We have a lot of respect for them.”

Derek Williams and the fast Tigers defense have their biggest challenge of the season going up against an explosive passing game led by one of the best junior quarterbacks in the state in Preston Welch, who enters the game with 1,103 passing yards and 17 touchdowns, as well as one of the most dynamic offensive weapons in the state in Kentrell Prejean, who leads the area in receiving with 22 catches for 629 yards and nine touchdowns.

“Preston has made great strides from last year. He was a sophomore starter last year. He really had a great year for a sophomore. He’s done a great job in distributing the football. He’s played really efficiently. I think only one interception on the year through five games, which is tremendous, because we do ask him to make a lot of throws. We’ve certainly played against some great defenses. He’s had a great completion percentage. He’s made some explosive plays down the field and the most important thing is that he is protecting the football.”

“The receiving group is led by Kentrell Prejean. He had a breakout year his junior season, and we have four to five other guys that do a great job of protecting Kentrell since they all have great playmaking ability as well. We can spread the ball around and we don’t have to focus all of our energy on one guy. Jack Purser at tight end, Bradford Cain at wide receiver, Hayden Vice at wide reciever, Cade Robin at wide receiver, Carlos O’Brien at wide receiver, and that’s not including our top three running backs that we also play. We’ve been able to get touchdowns from eight different skill guys this season, and that is credit to Preston.”

The defense has also stepped up and has played a big part in this winning streak.

“The defense has definitely stepped up. We don’t have a lot of big players, but we have been able to make up for it with out size and our speed. They’ve done a good job of diagnosing what the offense is doing and running to the football. We are multiple enough to keep them off balanced and you can’t hide from the fundamentals. The number one priority is to stop the football and all the teams we’ve played can really run the football. It was some physical games and tough challenges for our defense. Our kids did a great job of hanging in those games.”

In the battle of two of the state’s undefeated teams, something had to give and for Coach Charpentier, he feels that the little things will make the difference.

“We’ve played some good football, but we have to make some strides running the football. This is a tough group to try and do it against, but we are going to keep pounding it and we just have to make some progress there.”
