Saturday, September 20th, Southern was able to prevail against Prairie View A&M as a complete football team. The 34-24 victory for the Jaguars is huge for the team’s morale and outlook on the season. Southern was able to jump on the Panthers early with a 10 point lead at the end of the first, increasing that to a 14 point lead by the half with a score of 24-10. Southern came out firing in the 3rd quarter putting the game out of hand taking a 34-10 lead going into the 4th quarter.
Big plays sparked the victory Saturday for Southern. Lenard Tillery had a 36 yard run to start the game for Southern. Travel to the end of the 2nd quarter, Prairie View scores to create a 17-10; but, Southern was able to return the responding kick-off all the way to the end zone to take the wind out of Panthers at half-time. Many thought Southern was going to consider playing freshman quarterback Deonte Shorts after the great 2nd half he had last week, but the Jaguars’ coaching staff showed faith in Austin Howard as he received all the reps Saturday. A shaky roster was Southern’s biggest weakness heading into Saturday’s game, but a win will help that situation. Next week Southern takes on Alcorn State.
