Southern University Pounds Arkansas-Pine Bluff 57-24

By: Chassity Oubre

The Southern University Jaguars traveled to Pine Bluff, Arkansas to take on the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions with one thing in mind, and that was to come home with a win. It did not take the Jaguars long to demonstrate that they had put last week’s terrible loss to Alcorn State totally behind them. The Jaguars jumped all over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions early in the game. Southern leaped to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked backed. By halftime the contest was virtually over due to the Jaguars going into the break with a 41-8 lead. The third quarter proved to be no different, as the Jaguars continued their scoring blitz over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions, adding sixteen more points to their tally. The Jaguars were perfect in the Red Zone scoring all six times. The hosting Golden Lions seemingly had no answer to the aggressive offensive attack of the Jaguars, as they went down to defeat by the score of 57-24. The Golden Lions scored two touchdowns late in the game, but it was not enough to do dig out of the deep hole that the Jaguars put them in. The Jaguars collected a total of 482 yards of offense. Southern’s quarterback Austin Howard, threw for 229 yards and connected for 4 touchdown strikes. The other portion of the offense and scoring came from Southern’s running backs, Lenard Tillery and Malcolm Crockett, as they combined for 218 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns. The Jaguars stout defense was spearheaded by linebackers Alfred Palomino and Dakota Starks, with each having six tackles. The Jaguars come back home next Saturday as they prepare to host the 2-6 Alabama A&M Bulldogs. Southern will carry a 5-4 overall record and a 5-2 SWAC record along with the momentum after coming off a huge bounce-back win. The game will be at A.W. Mumford Stadium and is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
