Southeastern Football Practice Report – Day 5

HAMMOND, La. – The opening week of fall practice for the Southeastern Louisiana football team culminated with the Lions putting on full pads for the first time Sundaymorning at Strawberry Stadium.

Sunday’s practice also marked the first time during camp the team all practiced at once. The first four days featured split-squad practices.

“It was awesome to have our whole team together for the first time,” Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo said. “The split-squad practices served their purpose in enhancing the evaluation process, but it’s good to have us all working together as one.”

Throughout the first week, Scelfo has been pleased with the team’s energy on defense. Sunday his praise was reserved for the other side of the ball.

“Our offense came out here and did an excellent job today,” Scelfo said. “We’ve had too many turnovers the last couple of days and today our offense did a much better job protecting the ball.”

The Lions’ primary growth during week one has been mental, according to Scelfo.

“The process of taking what we’re learning in the meeting room and applying it on the practice field has been smoother each day,” Scelfo commented. “Guys are playing faster and there’s less correction coming from the coaching staff.”

While Scelfo is pleased with the team’s progress, he and his staff are looking for continued improvement as the team moves closer to the 2018 season opener.

“We’re still a constant work in progress,” Scelfo said. “Our players have to continue to improve in all three phases and gain a better understanding of the intricacies of our schemes.”

SLU will return to the practice field on Monday at 9 a.m. Southeastern opens the 2018 season on Aug. 30 with a 7 p.m. contest at ULM.
