Southeastern Football Practice Report – Day 4

HAMMOND, La. – Mother Nature didn’t slow down the Southeastern Louisiana football team as it continued fall camp with a rain-soaked practice Saturday morning at Strawberry Stadium.

SLU head coach Frank Scelfo was pleased with how his team responded to the weather conditions.

“We have to be weather-proof,” Scelfo commented. “Whether it’s hot, cold or raining, we can’t let that influence the way we play. Our guys did a nice job adjusting to the conditions today.”

Scelfo was pleased with the effort on Saturday after a little slip in energy on Friday. He was quick to praise the defensive energy in both sessions. In the second session of the day, Josh Carr, Marquis Johnson, Zeke Walker and Matthew Wright all had interceptions during team drills.”

“We were able to correct a lot of mistakes in our meetings yesterday,” Scelfo said. “In both sessions, the defense definitely had the upper hand today, coming up with interceptions and turnovers.”

Saturday marked the final day of the split squad practices for the Lions. Scelfo believed those initial four days of evaluation were key.

“We’ll have a personnel meeting tomorrow to discuss strengths and weaknesses of each player and what we were able to see with each guy getting maximum reps these first four days,” Scelfo commented. “We have a much better handle on where guys are going to fit into our scheme.”

The Lions will return to the practice field on Sunday at 9 a.m. and will be in full pads for the first time this fall.

“It’ll be nice to have everyone out here working together as team all at once,” Scelfo commented. “The evaluation process in ongoing and we’re excited about the process thus far.”

Southeastern opens the 2018 season on Aug. 30 with a 7 p.m. contest at ULM.
