HAMMOND, La. – Long-time Franklinton High School head football coach Shane Smith has joined the Southeastern Louisiana football coaching staff, SLU head coach
Ron Roberts announced on Monday.
Smith will be an assistant coach on the offensive staff, working with the wide receivers. Smith joins the Lion program after two decades of coaching experience at the high school level in Louisiana.
Smith spent the previous 16 seasons as the head football and track coach at FHS. He led the Demons to seven district championships. The 2010 Franklinton team brought a Class 4A title home from the Superdome.
A three-time Class 4A State Coach of the Year and four-time district coach of the Year at Franklinton, Smith was also held in high regard by his peers. He served as the president of both the Louisiana Football Coaches Association (LFCA) and Louisiana High School Coaches Association (LHSCA).
Smith began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Amite High School. He eventually moved on to Independence High School, where he spent four seasons as an assistant football coach. He was part of a staff that helped the Tigers to consecutive state finals in 1997 and 1998.
Smith will be returning to his alma mater. He earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and health studies from Southeastern in 1996, before earning his master’s degree in educational leadership in 2008.
Smith will begin his on-field duties when the Lions report for fall camp in early August. Southeastern will open the 2016 season onSept. 3, traveling to Stillwater, Oklahoma to face FBS opponent Oklahoma State.
