Q & A with Coach Bryon Porter
How would you decide the culture of your football program?
I wanted to create a positive culture and in doing so I created the standard. For the kids that I coach this is all they know therefore they have developed a standard.
How do you handle discipline and accountability?
We hold each other accountable, discipline is always a part. Using discipline is being where you are and where you are supposed to be. You cannot have discipline without being a part of an organized sport, the kids also put each other accountable.
How often do players get individual feedback?
They get it from the coaching staff everyday. We have a very knowledgeable staff, we have been together since day 1. We do not have any turnovers.
How does your program support academic success?
Student athletes have to do a couple of things before making it onto the field. A lot of the kids have aspirations to go to college, we talk about that and how to be academically prepared for when they go to the college level. The kids understand how important academics are in the program and how much they play a part.
How do you prepare the players for their life after football?
Most of the coaches on the staff all played on the collegiate level. The power of sports play a huge part in our power of development. Having coaches that have been in their shoes truly helps. There are virtues that I have learned to help them get over adversity as well as to help them on how to move on, followed by how to prepare them for their future.
What is a quote that you stand by as a coach?
“Treat a man as he is, he will remain as he is, but if you treat a man as he could be, he will become everything that he should be.” Ralph Waldo Emerson.
What led you to wanting to be a coach?
Being in the game of football, although I never played in the NFL. I had the opportunity to play in college, football has always had an impact on my life. I was a Louisiana trooper for years. I like to give back to all the youth. I remembered the relationship I had with my coaches and I still talk to all of my coaches from high school. It is the long lasting memories, relationships, and bonds that I have with them that inspired me to want to be a coach as well.
Any coaches you would like to shoutout?
The whole staff, Offensive Coordinator Brandon Porter, along with coaches Jermey Garrett, Marcus Wilridge, Klay Goner, and Sam George. They all do a great job working with the kids.
How do you help the players improve?
Doing practice, film study, and making sure technique and fundamental styles are good. As well as a bunch of repetitions, walk throughs in practice, and I put them in every possible position for when it comes down to the game so they know how to react to it.
How do you improve when a game does not go as well as expected?
I never get too high when it is going good and I never get too low after a loss. One thing I really like about my coaching staff is we all try to stay laser focused, once the game is over we move on to the next game. We want the kids to be the best versions of themselves.
