Roberts Pleased With SLU’s Progress Through Opening Week of Spring Drills

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team wrapped up its first week of spring practice on Saturday with a two-hour practice at Strawberry Stadium.

Southeastern Louisiana head coach Ron Roberts has been pleased with what he’s seen from his team through the first four practices of spring practice, which opened Monday and runs through the April 1 Spring Game at 2 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.

“The first week of spring is a lot about alignment and making sure we’re getting our assignments right,” Roberts said. “As we move forward, we have to concentrate on playing with the intensity that is necessary to compete for a conference championship. The last two days, we’ve been very pleased with the effort.”

One of the key storylines in camp on the offensive side of the ball is who will win the quarterback job, as the Lions look to replace a pair of 2016 seniors. Prior to spring practice, SLU added another arm into the mix in Lorenzo Nunez, who transferred in from South Carolina.

“We definitely have good competition at quarterback and hopefully we’ll know how it’s going to pan out by the end of spring,” Roberts said. “All of our guys are still in the early learning stages and it’s a wide-open race right now.”

On the defensive side, Southeastern boasts a veteran group with several key returners.

“With the exception of defensive line, which is our youngest position, we’re pretty mature on the defensive side of the ball,” Roberts commented. “We’re ahead as far as knowing where we’re supposed to be and what our assignments are, so we want to focus on playing with the speed and intensity we need to for the rest of spring.”

The Lions will return to the practice field on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. practice to open the second week of spring workouts.
