Give it up for the latest Rising Star, John Velasques, from the class of 2028! John was seen showing off his skills at the 2025 Gridiron Elite camp in Westwood, Texas. John is mainting a 3.6 GPA while playing football, basketball, and baseball, showing off his academic abilities. He is 5’9, weighs 165 lbs, and was recorded running a 4.88 and 5.29 on the shuttle run and 40 yd dash. John’s bench reaches 175 lbs, his squat is 275 lbs, while his clean maxes out at 225 lbs. John previously reached the 3rd round in playoffs, with his current football team. These abilities have made John Gridiron’s latest Rising Star.

What did you look forward to the most at the camp?
“Definitely exposure and getting to know more people.”
What was your favorite drill?
“The 7 on 7.”
What did you like about the camp?
“Overall, it was a lot of fun, and I got to meet new people.”
What skill do you think you performed well?
“My throwing.”
What is your biggest strength?
“My football I.Q.”
Do you think you performed at your best?
“No ma’am. I think I could definitely have shown off a little more.”
What was the most difficult part of the camp for you?
“Adjusting to the people on my 7 on 7 team.”
If you could go back and do something differently, what would it have been?
“Focused a little more and just really put in the effort.”
Out of all of the camps available, why did you choose ours?
“It was the most local.”
Did you learn any important lessons at the camp?
“I learned to just be myself and show what I can do best.”
Why do you play football?
“I love it. It’s my passion, my whole family has played, and I just grew up with it.”
Do you have a role model in your life?
“In general, my older brother. He’s like a father figure to me. But specifically for football, Patrick Mahomes, I really relate to him. He shows me that I have the chance to do what he did.”
If you could offer one piece of advice for others participating in the camp, what would it be?
“Try hard, stay loose, and do the best you can. Hard work pays off.”
