Returning for his third year as the starting quarterback, Kane West looked in total command of the offense as he completed touchdown passes to Seth Aucoin and Marcus Gradney while also rushing for a touchdown and finding his other reliable receiver Blake Moran on multiple occasions. Even backup quarterback Nathan Zaunbrecher looked sharp and showed that he can run the offense just as effectively.

“We put a lot of work in this summer. We’ve been in the weight room more this summer and we played a lot of 7v7. You were here for our tournament. We do a lot. Even our number twos were throwing the ball well. We look like we were ready to play.”

With the many different weapons in the passing game, the St. Edmund offense will be exciting to watch.

“The first play, Seth Aucoin went 70 yards for a touchdown. Seth is a 4.3 type guy. I told him that he has a gift and most people don’t have that. We used that on the first play and he was able to take it to the house. We got a lot of speed and Marcus Gradney being a strong tight end, Louisiana Tech is looking at him. You saw Blake Moran at the camp before and he is a great kid. Kane is going to be the guy that puts it all together. Even when Nathan came in with the twos, he looked good. The offensive line looked great as well. It was a great scrimmage for us.”

As good as the offense looked, Coach Shiver was just as pleased with how the defense looked in its scrimmage against Peabody.

“Defensively, we looked good. I believe we held them and they didn’t get a first down until the second drive of 12. It was really good and it’s coming together.”

On the other side, the Peabody Warhorses may have come on the losing end of the scrimmage, but there are some good things to take away for head coach Harry Coleman and his staff.

“We played well. I was expecting some mental mistakes, some blown coverages, some misblocks, tackles. It happens with football. We are going to get back to the drawing board and we will fix it. We played a great team and there were some young guys that I thought played well. I liked the effort of our guys and how they were running to the ball, but the mistakes are fixable and we are going to be alright.”

The St. Edmund Blue Jays will look to build on their success in the scrimmage with their jamboree on Friday against Catholic Pointe Coupee while the Peabody Warhorses will look to get back on track Saturday against Central Catholic.
