Madison Prep shutout Mentorship Academy 61-0

In tonight’s Friday night matchup, the Madison Prep Chargers traveled down the road to Memorial Stadium to play against district opponent, the Mentorship Academy Sharks. Madison came into the game with a 2-2 record on the season after their recent win against Parkview Baptist 27-6. Mentorship entered the game with a 0-4 record on the season, looking to get their first win.

Mentorship Academy won the kick toss and differed to the second half. The Chargers offense came out strong as Tylan Johnson was able to connect with both David Jones and Semaj Pierre for back-to-back first down completions. The Charger offense struck first with a goal line touchdown by running back Tony Lewis. After kicking the ball to Mentorship, the Chargers were able to score again with a 20 yard interception returned for a touchdown by safety Treylan James. With both the offense and defense getting points on the board for the Chargers, the special teams unit were looking to get in the mix as well.

After the Chargers’ defense forced Mentorship to a 3 and out, the Chargers’ punt return unit were able to block the punt and return it for a touchdown. With only 6 minutes played in the first quarter, the Chargers offense, defense, and special team were able to get some points on the board. The Chargers defense were able to come with another turnover as Taron Cage recovered the loose ball fumble. Madison Prep capitalized on the defense’s turnover with a 9 yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Semaj Pierre. The Chargers were not finished as Tylan Johnson was able to find the end zone for a rushing touchdown with :18 seconds left in the first quarter. Madison Prep put up 34 unanswered points in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Madison Prep defense came out with the same energy and intensity. The defensive line did an excellent job of bringing constant pressure, not allowing the Mentorship offense to get anything going all night. As a whole, the Chargers defensive unit played loud and aggressive. Everyone was rallying to the ball and they did a job of not allowing any big plays to happen. The Chargers offense were able to put some more points on the board after driving downfield, Johnson was able to find his tight end, Thomas Morris. The Chargers defense were able to get a couple stops and forced the Mentorship Sharks to turn the ball over on downs. One play, Johnson was able to get his 4th touchdown of the game on a screen pass to Hezekiah Dantzler with 1:23 remaining in the second quarter.

Mentorship started the second half of the game with the ball. Mentorship’s quarterback went down in the first half with an injury but he was able to return and tried to get their offense going. After a few first downs for the Sharks, the Chargers defense were able to get their third turnover of the game with an interception returned for a touchdown. The Chargers offense were able to get another touchdown in the third quarter to make the score 61-0. Madison Prep would go on to get their first shutout win on the season.

Next week, the Chargers will be traveling to Port Allen to take on the Port Allen Pelicans at 7pm.
