Lutcher cruises to 4-0 with win over Vandebilt Catholic

Check out these Week 5 Highlights!

The Lutcher High Bulldogs were able to dominate Vandebilt Catholic 33-0 in tonight’s showing. This was a game that their defense utterly dominated in as they have been doing throughout the entire season. Lutcher now moves to 4-0 on the season and they look to continue to ride behind their amazing defense.

Although the talk of this team is centered around their defense allowing only 4.5 points throughout 4 games, their offense certainly showed up to play tonight. They consistently scored and remained aggressive over the entire course of the game. Two key contributions were from QB, Zach Jenkins, who had a rushing touchdown along with 2 passing touchdowns and RB/WR, Trenton Chaney, who had 3 total touchdowns.

As stated, Trenton Chaney and Zach Jenkins played a huge role in this team’s offense tonight and have did this during the entire season. Chaney, the senior RB/WR, has 34 carries for 295 yards(8.7 YPC) and 5 rushing touchdowns along with 14 receptions for 221 yards with another touchdown in the previous three games. Jenkins on the other hand, has 23 passes completed on 33 attempts(69.7%), with 2 passing touchdowns and a 115.6 QBR. He also had 17 carries for 44 yards and another 3 touchdowns on the ground in his previous three games.

Other key players of the game were Jaimylon Joseph, who Coach Jenkins was adamant about his emergence and growth as a solid RB option, Coy Ruiz, who leads his teams in tackles, and Tariot Snowden, who was all over the field tonight. That said, this defense is great as a collective. It takes all 11 players on field, players on the sidelines, and coaches in order to be as dominant a they have been through four games. Allowing 4.5 points per game is an absurd stat that they take pride in on a weekly basis.

The Bulldogs, who are coming off of winning a state championship in 2022, and coming short of one in 2023, look to reestablish that winning culture and identity that has been set for that program under Coach Jenkins, who has consistently won as both coordinator and head coach of the Bulldogs. This is a game that was no different, as Vandebilt Catholic was a more than formidable opponent who came into tonight with a record of 4-0 as well.

Even with the standout players all over the field tonight, this was a big win as a collective. Every player, regardless of their role showed up to play. Vandebilt came out hot and looking to score at the start of the game and a fumble halted that momentum. After this, every time Vandebilt got the ball, they were forced to punt or turned it over on downs. Meanwhile, Lutcher High was building momentum on their offense and continued to dominate throughout.

After the game, I was able to talk to Coach Jenkins

“I think you saw our defense show how dominant they could be. Jaylon Coleman is a great back, we were focused on being able to slow him down and stop some of the explosive plays and our defense did an outstanding job. Off front, we have Parquette, Reshad Sterling, and Marcus Gibson. I said this an interview earlier this week he has gotten better and better each week and now he’s a formidable guy up front and I think just our front seven just did an excellent job of being able to stop the run and then I think our young secondary does a good job but when we can get teams, and we get a lead, and we can dial up the pressure, we can we can be pretty dangerous defensively. Offensively, I thought at times we showed that we can be really, really good, but then too many times we just make too many mistakes and errors and we kind of let those mistakes compound us, so if we can clean up those mistakes on the offensive side, we can we can be as good as we wanna be.”

Coach Jenkins when asked how he thought his team played

“It’s it’s been a a different kind of game each week that we’ve played, uh week one against Slidell, we played in the pouring down rain, so it was some limited conditions. Week two, we played Liberty and I don’t know if any of you ever seen what Liberty and coach Andy Boone does, but he’s lined up with seven offensive lineman and he’s got three running backs and they’re running the ball, and goes for it every fourth down. They gave us problems. They say we play way too many snaps in the field and then last week, in the first half, we just came out and dominated Assumption, so I think our guys are hungry to kind of show in a more conventional setting what they can do over a course of a football game and all our D showed up and played tonight well.”

Coach Jenkins when asked how his defense was able to maintain dominance over the season

“I just think when we had the opportunity, we got different guys that can carry the ball. I think they kind of all give you a different look. We had a couple of big runs early on with Jaimylon Joseph, who’s a sophomore. We think he’s kind of the next guy, and he’s just getting his feet wet, but then when you get start people going side to side with a quick pass the game and Trent Cheney going side to side, and then all of a sudden. Zach can kind of come in and kind of pound in the middle a little bit, it gives us a different kind of dynamics, there, but really our offensive line. We’ve got all of those guys back, all five offensive linemen and both tight ends, all played every game for us last year. So they’re experienced groups, so it’s not a lot that don’t see on Friday nights that can get them confused, they really do a good job in our gaps and scheme stuff and adjusting to the teams too.”

Coach Jenkins on what was the key to the running game.

Well that one of the things that we gotta focus on, we got to get our bodies back underneath us, we had some issues with some some kind of nagging injuries, that kind of keep us out of practice and I think that’s why you see some of the sloppiness at time. So we got a bit of clean that up this week, get healthy and be ready to go on a show week, I know South Terrebonne does a good job on defense, so offense is gonna be a good test for us to step up and correct some of these mistakes.

Coach Jenkins on what we can expect next week on a short week

This was a great, dominating win over a really good opponent for Lutcher High. They look to carry this momentum onto next week as they host 3-2 South Terrebonne on a short week game this upcoming Thursday. Meanwhile, Vandebilt Catholic looks to bounce back as they host 1-5 South Lafourche.
