LSU Lands Oregon State All-Pac 12 Linebacker Omar Speights & Edna Karr 3 Star Defensive Back Ryan Robinson Jr.

Yesterday was a good day for the defensive side of the football for the LSU Tigers picking up two talented players on that side of the football with one coming from the transfer portal and the other coming from this 2023 high school class.

With some of the talent at linebacker leaving whether it is the NFL Draft or the transfer portal, Coach Kelly and the Tigers’ coaching staff put their primary focus on adding more talent and depth to the linebacker room and boy, did they start off strong in getting one of the top linebackers in the Pac-12.

It was confirmed yesterday that Oregon State linebacker Omar Speights committed to play at LSU. Speight was a standout for the Beavers in helping their program have the turnaround success that they had this season. At 6’1, 237 pounds, the 1st Team All-Pac 12 linebacker led the team last season in tackles with 83 and finished his career in Corvallis with 308 total tackles, 25 TFLs, five sacks, three interceptions, and three fumble recoveries.

Speights will now join a linebacker room that also includes freshman All-American Harold Perkins, Greg Penn, West and Whit Weeks, and finally, Christian Brathwaite.

The Philadelphia native is the 11th player that the Tigers added from the transfer portal and is a huge addition, especially at a big position of need.

Getting one of the country’s best linebackers was not the only good news of the day for the Tigers, but the secondary has been bolstered some more after already making a huge splash in the transfer portal with the likes of Denver Harris (Texas A&M), Duce Chestnut (Syracuse), and JK Johnson (Ohio State) to name a few.

The next addition to the secondary is Edna Karr High School three star cornerback Ryan Robinson Jr., who will be enrolling at LSU as a preferred walk-on.

Despite being a preferred walk-on, Robinson has SEC scholarship ability as the three year starter for the Cougars received offers from Nebraska, Auburn, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida State, Michigan State, Oregon, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

Despite receiving offers from plenty of other big Power Five programs, Robinson could not pass up being part of a program that has been known as “DBU” even if it means him being a preferred walk-on to start off.

If there is anything that we learned about Brian Kelly in his first season is that he is willing to play the best players on the field regardless if they are five stars or walk-ons so the 5’11, 180 pound lockdown cornerback from New Orleans, Louisiana will get the chance to play for a scholarship and perhaps playing time next fall.
