A night after relieving Brian Kelly of his duties as LSU’s head coach, Joe Sloan is the next domino to fall as he has been relieved as LSU’s offensive coordinator after one and a half seasons in that role.
Sloan has been with LSU since 2022 originally serving as the quarterback coach where he helped Jayden Daniels ascend into being a Heisman Trophy winner in 2023. When former offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock left to become the play caller at Notre Dame, Sloan was elevated as the play caller in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin in 2024.
Last year in his first season as co-offensive coordinator, the Tigers ranked No. 2 in the SEC with 315 passing yards a game. The Tigers were also No. 5 in the league and No. 25 nationally in total offense with 431 yards per game.
This year, the LSU offense has underachieved only scoring more than 25 points one time this year, which was against Southeastern Louisiana University.
LSU currently ranks No. 6 in the SEC in passing offense, No. 12 in scoring (25.5), No. 14 in total offense (355.5) and No. 16 in rushing offense (106.3).
With the move, it was also announced that tight ends coach and running game coordinator Alex Atkins will take over the playcalling duties the rest of the year. Atkins has play calling experience as the offensive coordinator at Florida State in 2023 and 2023 under Mike Norvell.
LSU will begin the new look interim regime of Frank Wilson as head coach and Alex Atkins as offensive coordinator next week against Alabama on November 8th.
Other staff changes include Tim Rattay now coaching quarterbacks and Cordae Hankton now coaching the running backs.
