LC vs Texas College

The Louisiana College Wildcats traveled to Tyler, TX on Saturday to take on Texas College for the first time in school history, and the Wildcats would return with their first win of the 2016 season, a 49-18 rout of the Steers.

 

A week after five turnovers doomed LC against Huntingdon, the Wildcats turned the tables on Texas College with a total of six interceptions from five different players. Anthony Hargrave picked off two passes that set up the offense inside the 10 yard line both times and Mike Collins returned an interception 88-yards for a Wildcat score.

 

With Easton Melancon out due to an injury from the Huntingdon game, D’Ondre Joseph got the starting nod for week two. After a shaky start to the game Joseph would settle down and put the Wildcats on the board first with a 3-yard run with 3:07 left in the first quarter.

 

Ahead 14-0, the Wildcats got the ball back with 1:13 left in the second quarter and Joseph engineered a 5-play, 85 yard, touchdown drive in just over a minutes time, highlighted by a 46-yard pass down the sideline to Farron Jones.  

 

Head Coach Dennis Dunn said, “I thought the drive right before the half was the key to getting Dre settled in at quarterback, for him more than anything else. It was a game that we were fortunate to be able to hold Easton out and get him a week healthier going into next week.”

 

In the second half the Wildcats scored touchdowns on three out of their five possessions including Collins’ 88-yard interception return. Aurren Cooksey also scored his third touchdown of the season in the third quarter on a 15-yard run.

 

The defense shined throughout the game shutting out the Steers in the first half, and holding them to just 79 yards of total offense. Beside the six interceptions, Ryan DeMattie was a force at linebacker with eight tackles including 1.5 sacks and 2.0 tackles for loss.

 

Dunn said, “I thought our defense played extremely well, we made the one kick game error that gave them the ball in great field possession and wound up stealing the shutout from us.”

 

“I think this game will be a good film to see where we have made some progress and go back and see where we made some mistakes, and that’s why we have an opportunity to practice and get better.”
The Wildcats evened their record and one win and one loss and will return to Wildcat Field this Saturday to take on future ASC foe, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday on Community Appreciation Night.
