The Illinois Fighting Illini opened their 2025 season with a resounding statement: a commanding 52–3 victory over the Western Illinois Leathernecks at Memorial Stadium. Quarterback Luke Altmyer shined in his first start of the season, throwing for 217 yards and three touchdowns, completing 17 of 21 attempts.

Offensive Showcase

Illinois wasted no time asserting its dominance. In the first quarter, Altmyer connected with Tanner Arkin and Justin Bowick for short-yardage touchdown passes, pushing the score to 14–0.

The second quarter saw a continuation of the offensive fireworks: Aidan Laughery broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run, and kicker David Olano tacked on a 35-yard field goal. Later, Altmyer found Bowick again for a 13-yard scoring pass, stretching the lead to 31–0 before halftime.

The Illini didn’t let up in the second half. In the third quarter, Hank Beatty took a punt return 69 yards to the house, leaving no doubt about Illinois’s command on the field. The fourth quarter featured a late counter—Western Illinois got on the board with a 20-yard field goal—but Illinois answered swiftly. Kaden Feagin scored on a 7-yard run, and Laughery capped the night with a jaw-dropping 57-yard touchdown dash, sealing the 52–3 final advantage.
