Grambling Hosts Mickey Joseph Camp at Elite Training Academy

Last week, Grambling hosted the Mickey Joseph Camp at Elite Training Academy in Baton Rouge. The Tigers’ coaching staff is making its rounds around the state of Louisiana and what better place than in the heart of the state in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where head coach Mickey Joseph certainly knows the area.

“Baton Rouge is my home. I still have a house here and I still feel that Baton Rouge is a part of me and my family. It is a hidden gem when it comes to high school football. There is a lot of talent here and my roster is 15-17% of Baton Rouge kids. Coming back from Baton Rouge, you still are welcomed back with open arms. Also, the things that high school coaches do to you. They make sure that you see the right players and know everything about these kids.”

“I’ve been knowing Mickey since I’ve been coaching at West St. John. He was actually at Grambling at the time. I was on the staff at Grambling when he got hired and I couldn’t have been more thrilled. He trusts me with this area a lot. We have a lot of our kids from South Louisiana in the Baton Rouge area. There are a lot of kids from the Scotlandvilles, the Madison Preps, the Zacharys. I know what I am getting in these players and what kind of programs they are coming from.”

Before becoming the head coach at Grambling, Coach Joseph spent the 2017-2021 seasons at LSU as the wide receivers coach. He and recruiting coordinator/running backs coach Kris Peters definitely know what the Baton Rouge area has in store for talent.

“The overall talent here is amazing. We saw running backs, wide receivers, defensive backs, linebackers, quarterbacks. You can see the talent level in the Baton Rouge area and in the surrounding areas. Guys came from St. James, New Orleans, Houston, and other areas to today’s camp. South Louisiana is in really good hands as far as talent is concerned.”

The Grambling coaches reached out and extended an offer out to several players from the camp including former Gridiron Football Junior High All-American CJ Aguillard, U-High 2027 running back Corbin Odell, Manvel High School (Houston, Texas) RB Keith Williams, and Madison Prep 2026 WR Keyon Robinson, who recently committed to play for the Tigers.

Coach Joseph, Coach Peters, and the rest of the coaches are looking for talent to fit their program, but they are also hoping that the players pick up from what they learn from at the camp.

“I always say that we are going to coach them at the camp like we coach our kids. We are going to make sure that we are going to send them back healthy. We are going to coach with energy. We are going to coach with great technique and we are going to coach with great passion. We are going to make sure that you concentrate on your technique and that we are truthful with you. It’s the relationship that we form with these kids. That’s the best thing that comes out of these camps.”

“The one takeaway I want the kids to takeaway is to learn how to follow directions. Coaches want to be able to tell you something once maybe twice and then, you get it. If you have to tell them four or five different times, it is a trust factor because if I tell you something that many times, I don’t trust you to be on the field. It goes hand in hand, but I want to make sure that they can take something away from these camps and apply it to when they go back to their schools.”

The camp was held in front of over hundreds of campers at the brand new Elite Training Academy run by longtime LSU Athletics Equipment Manager Greg Stringfellow.

“Greg Stringfellow and I were together at LSU so we have a really good relationship. When they came over with this facility, the first thought was putting a camp over here. It’s a great facility. Every kid in Baton Rouge should come over here and workout at this place because they have the resources. That’s one thing about the athletes. You need resources. This place has everything that you need and it can make them better athletes.”

Grambling will host a couple of more football camps throughout June and after that, they will shift their focus on getting ready for the 2025 season.

“We did a lot of new things. We have some new coaches in the building, but we are still going to play with a whole bunch of passion and a whole bunch of physicality, but more discipline. Knowing now that Grambling is everybody’s Super Bowl. We understand that. They understand that. Now, it is time to get them what they want. If they want a Super Bowl every week, they will get a Super Bowl every week. We have 12 Super Bowls and if you get a chance to play one, just give it everything that you have.”

“We expect some good football. Last year, we were immature some ways. We gave some games away, but we are now older and I think our team camaraderie is so much better than it has been previously. We are going to win some games. We are a better football team and we just got to learn how to focus and finish. There were a lot of games we led going into halftime or into the fourth quarter, but we have to sustain that and finish our mission. That is what we are planning on doing.”
