We would like to welcome Cameron Rodgers to Gridiron, a 5’9, 165-pound linebacker who also plays strong safety out of Plaquemine High School. Rodgers is an electric playmaker that can see everywhere on the field and has a great sense to his game. He is very quick to the football, can make open field tackles with ease, can move from one side of the field to the other, and often gets into the backfield where he does a lot of damage. During his senior year, he totaled 48 tackles with 28 of them solo and also had a sack and two forced fumbles. He currently has two offers and is committed to Louisiana Christian University.
Here is my interview with Cameron Rodgers:
What has your football journey been like? At what age did you start playing football, and what inspired you to play football?
I never did like football at first actually but when I saw my brothers and big cousin playing, I started playing at four years old and they just inspired me.
Who have been some of the biggest influences in your journey? Family members, coaches, etc?
My grandpa really pushed me to start because he told me when I was younger, he got the influence and my mom said it would be a good idea to start playing. I also had an uncle, who played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
How would you describe the football culture at your school, community, and in Louisiana?
It’s amazing. The town as small as it is, it never comes togther the way it does except for football so that is what makes it special.
What makes Louisiana high school football different from any other state?
Honestly, just the culture because a lot goes on in Lousiana when we see big crowds and nothing like football on a Friday night where everyone is on the same side and it brings everyone together. We just get away from all the outside distractions and it’s beautiful.
Do you have a core memory of playing as a little kid, like when you first started playing?
When I first started playing, I was playing on a team where we all knew each other for a long time but we were not that good. As I got older, around middle school, I switched teams and things got better from there. We were a power team. We went to the youth super bowl two times in a row.
What position do you feel like you are better at? DB or Linebacker?
Linebacker because I feel like I know how to own the field. I know I’m a leader so it doesn’t take much for me to be able to lead and control and it helps my team a lot and I get to see everything.
Walk me through your preparation during a typical game day.
I wake up, pray, do a hundred pushups, take a shower, eat breakfast, go to school, lock in throughout the whole day because my coach always tells me you can’t just lock in right before the game. It starts the day before and in the morning. After school, I just make sure I stay locked in leading to the game, whether it’s a pregame meal or watching film, stay locked in.
What’s something about your game that you think separates you from other players at your position?
I’m a fourth player. I play all four quarters. I go full speed every play. I always bring the hype and it’s never a dull moment with me on the field.
What part or parts of your game do you feel like have improved the most over the years and what would you like to improve on?
Most improved part, honestly it’s personal for me and it’s my attitude. When I was younger, when stuff did not go my way, things would get out of hand but ever since I got to high school, I’ve prepared for seeing things better. I would like to improve my mindset and my speed. That’s about it.
What were some of the toughest challenges you faced over the years of playing?
Being from the city I am from, when we travel, we get a lot of hate dealing with the referees. Any time we get to a late stage in the game, the referees just fall apart for us. It’s us against the refs.
Do you treat every game the same way, or do you treat really big games, rivalry games, and playoff games a little bit differently?
I treat every game the same. I treat every opponent the same and they all get the same treatment. If you step in front of me, you gonna get what’s coming to you. I feel like everybody has those games that just tend to be more emotional and more personal. Everybody gets that same attitude from me.
What was the most memorable game you played, and why did it stand out?
This year, third round playoffs, or fourth round playoffs. In the third round, we played a team that put us out of the playoffs last year on our home field. We beat them this year and that was an amazing feeling since it was redemption.
How would you describe yourself as a leader to your teammates?
I’m the motivational type. I know to never put my teammates down because we go through different things in life and football. Everybody will always need somebody to try and help them go through certain situations all around and we have tremendous supporters on our team and coaching staff.
When people look back at your high school career, what do you hope they say about you as a player and person?
I was overly outgoing. No matter what my teammates or coaches needed me to be, I was there. if my coach said go I was gone until he said stop. When my teammates needed my back, I was there.
Did you play any other sports when you were younger, or do you do any others now?
I played baseball, basketball, and football and as I got to high school, I starting leaning more towards football. I focused more on football because I see my career in it.
Is there a specific college or colleges you have in mind, or a specific coach that you really want to play for, and why?
My dream school would obviously be LSU because I want to represent my state. Because LSU is like… that’s our home. So I always want to represent my state and my family.
If you could listen to three artists for the rest of your life, who would they be?
NBA Youngboy, FattMack, and Kevin Gates.
