The next stop of the 2025 Gridiron Football Spring Tour brings us to Plaquemine High School as the Green Devils took on the Carencro Golden Bears. Here are a couple of tidbits from both teams as they scrimmaged each other earlier this week.
Plaquemine Green Devils:
The Plaquemine Green Devils were one game away from being in the Superdome last year under head coach Donald Williams, Now, heading into 2025, the Green Devils are one of the favorites to win a state championship in Division II (Non-Select). Despite having to replace their starting quarterback and running back from a season before, the pieces are there to make a deep run this season.
QB Brennan Miles and RB Spencer Collins showed that they are ready to fill in the shoes of Nico Victorian and Tyrese Mosby respectively with really nice showings. Collins instantly was able to show the fans his home run hitting speed with three long touchdown runs throughout the scrimmage. He certainly was impressive and eased Green Devil fans after replacing a program great in Mosby. Meanwhile, Miles showed off a nice arm and had some nice connections highlighted by a deep touchdown catch from John Walker V.
“Coach wants me to step up this year and lead more. The limit is really high for our offense this year. We have a few guys on the offensive line stepping up, new running back, but we are going to make it work.”
Plaquemine 2027 WR John Walker V
Walker is the top playmaker returning for the Green Devils offense and going into his junior season, he is ready to take on the challenge of being a more vocal leader for that side of the football.
The other side of the football returns a confident defense that is capable of leading the pace while the offense continues to grow up. The secondary has a chance to be one of the best in the Baton Rouge area led by UL Ragin’ Cajuns commit Roderick Bingham, who had a fumble recovery in the spring game, Travis Riley, who had two interceptions in the spring game, and finally, Cameron Rogers, who made the biggest hit of the spring by far against Carencro.
“This DB group has been playing together since we have been 8 years old. We got the passion and love for each other.”

“Our motto is to hunt. It is doesn’t matter if we are defensive linemen, linebackers, defensive backs. Our goal is to get to the ball on every play. If we do our 1 in 11, we are getting there every play.”

Both offensively and defensively was full of big splash plays, but Coach Williams was most pleased with the development of his young offensive line.
“I have two kids on the offensive line that are going to be juniors next year in Luke Lewis and Reggie Trusclair. They are going to be juniors next year. They set the temp. Those two guys don’t get enough credit and they were a big part of the run we were on last year.”
Plaquemine Head Coach Donald Williams
Now, after an incredible season and a nice spring game, the Green Devils will look to continue this upward trajectory in the summer and most importantly, building on being consistent.
“It was a good 10 days. Our biggest message this spring was to create your own legacy. Don’t live in the past and I think they did a good job of doing that. It was super competitive and a lot of reps in for the younger guys. I am super proud of the guys. Like I tell them all the time, we are trying to set a culture. The way that we played tonight is definitely a stepping stone for that. We are not at the mountain top just yet, but it is a process getting there.”

Carencro Golden Bears:
After a playoff appearance last season in Division I (Select), this storied program is looking to take another positive step in the second year of the Gavin Peters era.
“We had a pretty good spring. We got to do a better job of resetting the line of scrimmage offensively. We got a lot of inexperience out there. We had some quarterback snap exchange issues tonight. We just do a better job of handling the snaps and resetting the line of scrimmage. We had a couple of game losing plays defensively that were just misalignments and we got to do a better job of tackling. If we correct those mistakes, I believe we have a chance to be a pretty good football team.”

There were some really good moments in the spring game. The Golden Bears’ passing game looked sharp with former Gridiron Football Junior High All-American QB Carson Gurzi throwing for four touchdown passes in the spring scrimmage 11v11 against a really good Plaquemine secondary. After being thrown into the fire last season as a freshman, Gurzi is ready to have an extended role as Carencro’s main triggerman.
“It is a different offseason because I am getting more reps. The goal is still the same. I want to lead the team to a district championship and a state championship. I still have the same goals and to help grow this team in every aspect. This offseason will be huge for myself and this team in growing and having a closer bond. That is what is going to help us this offseason.”

He also was able to sharpen his chemistry with star wideout Chantz Babineaux, who caught a deep touchdown pass from Gurzi in the spring game. As a former quarterback himself for the Golden Bears, the pair share a great rapport and chemistry which should make this duo one of the most dangerous in the Lafayette area.
“We are close on and off the field. I feel like our relationship is where it needs to be in order for us to win a district championship.”
Carencro 2026 WR Chantz Babineaux
Defensively, the Golden Bears have to replace two Gridiron Football All-Americans on that side of the football in Jakayln Roy and Brian Amune Jr. On both sides of the football, Coach Peters was happy with the progression of some other names that are expected to have breakout seasons this fall.
“Kendrick Bernard had a great night out here tonight. He was tough to cover out there and found his way into the end zone. Our left tackle Mister Finney is a freshman. He has a chance to be good. He is 6’6, 306 pounds so his best days are ahead of him. Jaelan Roberts at tight end, Micheal Francis on the defensive line, Wilson Landry in the secondary, Rontrell Woods in the secondary, etc. We have a lot of guys that are really impressive this spring and made some good plays out here tonight and will make plays in the fall.”
Carencro Head Coach Gavin Peters
The next step for the Golden Bears is to continue getting better and stronger in the offseason.
“We always want to go out there and compete for championships. Obviously, right now, we have our summer sacrifice. We are going to have our end of the school year awards tomorrow, give our offensive awards, give these guys a week off, and get started the first week of June. We are going to work on getting better, faster, stronger, and tougher.”
