Garrett Nussmeier Awarded Coveted 18 Jersey For LSU This Season

This morning, after LSU’s last fall scrimmage, it was announced that Garrett Nussmeier is next in line for the coveted and prestigious #18 jersey. This is the first time that a LSU quarterback has worn the jersey since the tradition first started with Matt Mauck back in 2003.

If anything points to the last time a LSU quarterback wore the 18 jersey, then Tiger fans should be excited as Mauck led the Tigers to a 2003 National Championship. Getting picked to wear the #18 jersey is one of the biggest honors at LSU as the number exemplifies leadership for the team.

Nussmeier is also on pace to be LSU’s all-time leading passer with 5,772 passing yards and 40 touchdowns heading into his final season after throwing for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns in his first full season as a starter.

As one of the top quarterbacks in college football entering the season, Nussmeier joins Mauck, Jacob Hester, Richard Dickson, Richard Murphy, Brandon Taylor, Bennie Logan, Lamin Barrow, Terrence Magee, Tre’Davious White, Christian LaCouture, John David Moore, Foster Moreau, K’Lavon Chaisson, Lloyd Cushenberry III, Chris Curry, Damone Clark, BJ Ojulari, Mekhi Wingo, Greg Penn, and Josh Williams.

It was also announced that Harold Perkins will wear the Tigers’ other coveted jersey number #7 for the second year in a row. The #7 jersey goes to the team’s most impactful playmaker as Perkins once again joins other greats like Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Leonard Fournette, DJ Chark, Grant Delpit, Ja’Marr Chase, Derek Stingley Jr., Kayshon Boutte, and Will Campbell.

The final announcement the team made today was that Nussmeier and Whit Weeks were named as permanent team captains for the year.
