Football’s Parry Nickerson Named to Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List

Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Release

OKLAHOMA CITY – Tulane football senior cornerback Parry Nickerson added another preseason honor this week, being named to the preseason watch list for the 2017 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award. One of the most coveted awards in college football, this award is given to the best defensive back in college football based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character.

Nickerson, a second-team All-American Athletic Conference and Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana selection a year ago, has previously received preseason honors from Phil Steele Publications and College Football News as well as being tabbed as a nominee for the 2017 Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.

The Algiers, La., native enters his senior season with 133 total tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries (including one for a touchdown), one blocked field goal, 22 pass breakups and 10 interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown) to his credit. Last season, he tied for 21st in the nation and second in The American in passes defended with 13 (nine passes defended and four interceptions) and was fifth in the nation in interception return yards with 171. Off the field, Nickerson was a member of Tulane’s 3.0 Club in Fall 2016. Active in the community, he has visited patients at Tulane Children’s Hospital and participated in kids’ skills camps for Special Olympics Louisiana and New Orleans Recreation Development Commission.

The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award winner is selected from three finalists by a screening committee and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 7 on ESPN. The Thorpe Award banquet will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, in Oklahoma City.
