DITR: Spencer Cornell (St. Stanislaus Catholic High School, Bay St. Louis, Mississippi)

Our newest Diamond in the Rough is Middle Linebacker Spencer Cornell out of St. Stanislaus Catholic High School. Spencer is 6’3 210 LBS, he runs a 4.8 40, benches 230 LBS, and has a power clean of 225 LBS. This will be Spencer’s 3rd year on the varsity squad. Spencer excels on the field and in the classroom, with a 4.0 GPA and having 109 tackles, 6 1/2 sacks, and 19 tackles for loss last season. Spencer was voted the teams most outstanding defensive player last season.

When did you start playing football?

“I started in the 6th grade so when I was 12 years old.”

What is your favorite part about football?

“My favorite part about football is the team camaraderie that comes with it.”

What is the hardest part about football?

“It can be difficult to stay focused when you get tired in the clutch parts of the game.”

What is something you have learned through football?

“That nothing will come easy, if you want success you need to put in the work for it.”

Do you play any other sports?

“I play forward on the basketball team.”

Who is your favorite college football team?

“The Florida Gators are my favorite team.”

Who is your favorite NFL Team?

“I like the Miami Dolphins.”

Who is your biggest role model?

“That would be my older brother who played at Cal. He showed me the work that is needed to reach your goals.”

Do you have any player that you try to emulate your game after?

“I like watching Leighton Vander Esch.”

How do you balance school and football?

“By doing the work no matter what even if I dont want to, you have to grind through it.”

Do you have any goals for the upcoming season?

“I want to win a state championship and really lead the team to that feat.”

What is your best skillset as a player?

“I am very good at stopping the run, I do that through filling the holes as best as possible.”

How do you prepare for a game?

“I hydrate all week, lock in at practice, and just try to stay as focused as possible on gamedays.”

What does it mean to be a good teammate?

“It takes leading by example, if someone messes up don’t get down on them help them work through it.”

How does your team find the success they are looking for next season?

“We need to work hard this offseason, and once the season comes around we need to take everyday like it is gameday.”
