DITR: QB Jerry Horne, Denham Springs High School (Denham Springs, LA)

One of the top quarterbacks in the Baton Rouge area returns for a fourth year as a varsity letterman in Denham Springs High School signal caller Jerry Horne. At the beginning of his career, it was evident that Horne was talented enough to make an early impact. He found some time on the field early on as a freshman and as a sophomore even when the Yellow Jackets had a Division I quarterback on their roster in Reese Mooney. Pushing the current ULM quarterback for starting reps gave him some early confidence and an early look of what it’s like to be the leading man at a 5A school.

“It taught me a lot. The battling made me so much better everyday and I was able to learn from Reese and learn what it takes to become a DI quarterback.”

Horne first was able to show what he could do on the big stage as a freshman in a huge playoff win when Reese was hurt.

“We were the underdogs against Central in the first round and we won 42-14 to advance to the second round. It was the first big game I played in and really showed me how fun high school football is going to be.”

At 6’2, 210 pounds, Horne possesses the physical skillset to become a quarterback at the next level as he not only has a rocket arm, but he has the ability to run with 4.8/40 speed and has already shown that he can step up on big stages like the playoff game his freshman year. His ability to make every throw while having the ability to pick apart defenses with his high football IQ makes him a quarterback that can check a lot of boxes.

“I’m a versatile quarterback. I’m a great leader and I can control the game. I can throw and run. I also am very smart and can read defenses really well.”

Despite his ability to pick apart defenses both physically and mentally, Horne wants to have more of a competitive advantage mentally.

“I want to be able to breakdown defenses a lot more and be able to tell what defenders are doing before they do it.”

Horne is not only a student of the game, but he is a hard-working student in general with a 4.0 GPA. Despite his on-field talent and incredible grades, the rising Denham Springs senior quarterback is still searching for his first offer even though he has received some interest from schools.

“I have no offers yet, but have had interest from South Alabama, McNeese, Southeastern, Nicholls, ULL, Stanford, and a few more.”

Right now, Horne is enjoying the recruiting process, but he has especially enjoyed his visit with South Alabama.

“I have loved South Alabama. They have showed a lot of love and the campus is beautiful.”

Wearing number nine on the field, Horne models his game after another number nine that is currently one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

“I model my game after Joe Burrow 1,000%. He is a playmaker and can do anything on the field.”

After a decent junior season in which he made All-Parish throwing for 1,570 yards and 10 touchdowns while rushing for three touchdowns on the ground, Horne is focused on leading the Yellow Jackets to a huge season in the fall.

“I want to bring Denham Springs to a state championship and be an All-State quarterback. This season, you should expect a team with grit and a chip on our shoulder. This team will be a lot similar to the team that went to the Quarterfinals two years ago if not better.”

Playing for his head coach Brett Beard, Horne tries to be a coach on the field and play the position his coach wants him to play.

“It’s amazing. He pushes me to the best I can be and gives me a great opportunity to showcase what I can do.”

For this upcoming fall, Jerry Horne has been a veteran and he is ready to use that experience to fully show what he has to offer, which also hopefully includes lighting up defenses and impressing college coaches.

“I am not only a quarterback. I’m a football player and a gamechanger.”
