DITR: Kameron Tillage, TE/DE, Southern Lab

Kameron Tillage is a two-time state champion for the Southern Lab Kittens. For the 2023-24 season, he is playing the defensive end position and the team has seen success with him in this role. The Kittens started the season off 3-0 with wins of huge margins. Over the past 2 weeks, they have fallen to 3-2 vs two great opponents in Denham Springs and Madison Prep. They are still a favorite in the 1A-Class.

While he is a great athlete on the field, his involvement in school and the community around him is what sets him apart from many high school athletes. Check out a list of his accomplishments so far below:

Okay first question: Who is your favorite NFL/College player that you try to model your game after?

My favorite NFL player is Cam Jordan, and I’ve always tried to model my game after his style. I grew up watching him play, and I like how he constantly finds ways to make big plays, no matter what. His use of both speed and technique to get past blockers stands out. His versatility on the field inspires me to push my game to the next level.

What’s your favorite thing about playing DE?

My favorite thing about playing DE is definitely going after the quarterback. There’s just something about getting through the line, beating your guy, and getting that sack.

How big of an honor was it for you to ern the Silver Congressional Award from Congressman Graves?

Earning the Silver Congressional Award from Congressman Garret Graves was a huge honor for me. It’s the highest civilian youth award from the U.S. Congress, which makes it really special. Being recognized for my personal growth, leadership, and over 200 hours of community service means a lot, especially knowing how much hard work went into it. But I didn’t do the service just for the award. It’s a way of life for me. Giving back is apart of who I am, and I’m truly grateful for this recognition that highlights the values my family and community have instilled in me.

You are very involved in school and in the community, what are your plans after high school? Would you like to play football on the college level and if nnot what will you focus on?

After high school, I plan to go to college to major in business and learn more about property acquistion. I’d also love to play football at the college level if I get the chance. My dream schools are Howard, FAMU, and NCAT, because they have great programs and would give me an opportunity to connect with other aspiring entrepreneurs while pursuing my passions on and off the field.

What has been your favorite HS game of your career so far and what made it your favorite?

My favorite game was last year’s semifinal against Ouachita Christian. The atmosphere was heated, and it really taught me an important lesson; that the game isn’t over until the final whistle. It showed me how important it is to stay focused and keep pushing until the very end, no matter what the scoreboard says.

How have the coaches and players around you at Southern Lab helped your improve to be the best that you can be?

The coaches and players at Southern Lab have pushed me to be better every day, no matter what. They don’t let me settle or get too comfortable. They always keep me striving for more. Knowing they believe in me and want to see me grow makes me work even harder to reach my full potential.

Entering your senior year, what are some personal/team goals that you look to accomplish this year?

Heading into my senior year, one of my main goals is to get back to the Superdome and finish my high school career with three state championship rings. Not many people can say they’ve done that, and it would be the perfect way to cap off my time at Southern Lab.

What’s a game you are looking forward to this season?

I’m really looking forward to the games against Kentwood and Madison Prep this season. Those matchups are always intense because of the rivalry, and they’re both strong teams that bring a lot of competition. It’s the kind of game where everyone steps up, and I love that energy.
