Diamond In The Rough: Jontayvion Mcghee

Jontayvion Mcghee is a class of 2021 athlete out of Opelousas High School in Opelousas, Louisiana. At 6’2″, Mcghee plays both cornerback and wide receiver. At 155 pounds, he is an impressive athlete who is a solid pass defender. He breaks on the ball well is also a solid defender in the run support. He makes it known that he is willing to put it any amount of work to get better!

What age did you begin playing football and what motivated you to keep playing?

I was in seventh grade when I started playing football. What made me want to play was that I saw others going to try out. I wanted to try it as well and I ended up being good at it.

Are you involved in any other sports at Opelousas? If so, what position do you play on those teams?

I am also on the basketball team and I am a shooting guard. It helps, especially with cornerback, as it’s the same thing as playing defense. It also helps open up your hips.

What other activities are you involved in besides sports?

I play video games and hang out with my friends a lot. My favorite video game to play is NBA2k!

What’s your favorite thing about each position?

As a cornerback, I love that I can guard and stop a person from getting touchdowns. I can also help the team through tackling. My favorite thing about playing wide receiver is that I can make touchdowns and score for my team.

What are some personal goals you have for next season?

For next season, I want to be the best that I can be. I want to be the best for myself and my team.

What’s been the highlight of your football career?

The highlight was when I first started playing last year and I got to start.

How do you think coaches and teammates would describe you as a player?

They would say that I come in and do work. I also lead by example and show others how to do things the right way.

What type of things do you do in your offseason to keep yourself in shape for the upcoming season?

I’ve been working out a lot. I do pushups and run.

What has football taught you about life?

Football taught me to never quit as they’re always someone out there working hard as well.

What would you bring to a college team?

I would bring a good skill set and a great work ethic.

Are there any college or NFL athletes that you look up to or try to model your play style after?

Odell Beckham is my favorite! I definitely want to be on his same level one day.

How do you handle wins and losses?

When I win, I enjoy it with my teammates. When it comes to losing, I just go over film to figure out what went wrong so it can be fixed.

How do you balance school work and football?

After and before practice, I make sure to do all of the schoolwork that I can.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I see myself in or out of college. Hopefully, I am doing good and settling down!

What’s your favorite thing about playing football in Louisiana?

My favorite thing about playing football in Louisiana is going against all of the great competition! There’s so many good people to go against. It exposes how good you really are.

What things are you looking for most in a football program?

I am looking for a program that can help me get better overall as a person and an athlete.

Three words to describe yourself are

I am funny, hardworking, and a leader.

What would you like to major in?

I’m interested in games a lot. I would like to study and learn how to make them.

What motivates you to keep going?

What motivates me to keep going is that my father passed away. I have to keep going hard for him.
