Destrehan Makes Statement In Battle Of Undefeated Wildcats With 48-7 Win Over East St. John

In this Friday night battle between two undefeated Wildcats teams, it was the Destrehan Wildcats that were able to take care of the East St. John Wildcats in a 48-7 victory at Joe Keller Stadium.

There was a lot on the line for both of these teams as not only an undefeated season was at stake, but also the 7-5A district championship was at stake as well last night. It was Destrehan that got it for the taking right from the very start.

Destrehan started the onslaught scoring its first three touchdowns off of its first four offensive plays. Shane Lee broke off a 43 yard run to set Destrehan up with a 22 yard touchdown run from Tulane commit Jai Eugene Jr. to make it 7-0 early.

Then, Destrehan’s defense forces a takeaway as Andrew Schafer intercepts East St. John quarterback Yashua Mitchell and Destrehan scores on the very next play on a Shane Lee touchdown run to give Destrehan a 14-0 lead.

The lead continued to add on for Destrehan as Eugene completed a 57 yard touchdown pass to Brandon Freeman to make it a 21-0 advantage for Marcus Scott’s team. Brandon Brown and his East St. John Wildcats did get a touchdown on the next drive to make it 21-7 off of a touchdown pass from Mitchell to Koyal Gray Jr. from 32 yards out, but that was as close as it got for the home team.

Destrehan rattled off 27 unanswered points in the first half to cruise by East St. John the remainder of the game. Destrehan’s four scores came off a touchdown run from Lee, a 44 yard punt return from Daniel Blood, a touchdown pass from Eugene to Lee, and finally, a touchdown pass from Jackson Fields to Blood to end the scoring.

There would be no more scoring in the second half and Destrehan continued its undefeated season while ending East St. John’s undefeated hopes in crushing fashion.

Shane Lee was the main offensive catalyst with 11 carries for 147 yards and two touchdowns plus one touchdown reception while Destrehan’s defense shut down an explosive East St. John offense.

Up next, Destrehan (9-0) looks to complete an undefeated regular season and district championship next Friday against Thibodaux at home while also clinching a top five seed in the Division I playoff bracket.

Meanwhile, East St. John (8-1) will look to bounce back at home against Holy Cross next Friday night to end the regular season on a high note before the playoffs start .
