Denham springs have 43 seniors on this roster and their experience showed through their ability to stay poised despite a slow start to the game. Speaking of the start of the game Denham springs started off returning the ball with returner Tanner Koerner taking them all the way to the Woodlawn’s 48 yard line. But, this momentum was short lived as Denham Springs fumbled the ball caused by Woodlawn’s Jaylen Knox. Alongside the fumble recovery Woodlawn pick up a quick 30 yards off the screen pass to Alonzo Luckett. Unfortunately for Woodlawn this would be the only first down of the drive due to an inability to develop a run game so they were forced to punt. And after a Woodlawn punt Denham Springs attempted to set up their own run game but, 2 plays into the drive Denham Springs fumble the ball a second time. With this second chance Woodlawn started the drive off with another pass to Alonzo Luckett to pick up 12 yards. And once again Woodlawn would be stopped trying to run the ball on their next 2 downs and with a dropped pass on the third they were once again forced to punt. In the first play of Denham Springs drive Woodlawn’s Rashad Flemming is able to get in the backfield for a tackle for loss. After this though, Denham Springs would rattle off two quick firsts with catches from Da’Sean Goldman and Enzo Landry. After these two catches Denham Springs surprises with a run to running back Brenton Paul who ran 40 yards for a Denham Springs touchdown putting the score 7-0 going their way. With the first score of the game there were already 2 fumbles and there would immediately be 2 more as on the first plays of Woodlawn and Denham Springs drives respectively. With this wackiness occurring the game got even stranger after Denham Springs would pick up back to back pass interference calls giving Woodlawn advantageous field position. Woodlawn though was unable to take advantage as they fumbled the ball off an errant snap causing a 10 yard loss essentially erasing one of the penalties. Alongside this they continued to lose yardage as the Denham springs defense picked up a sack and eventually force a Woodlawn punt. Afterwards, Denham Springs offense started off blazing with an 80 yard run from Brenton Paul to put them in the red zone. But, the blaze would soon turn their drive to ash as Woodlawn’s Jaylen Knox came up with a big interception to stop the offensive onslaught. Woodlawn would not start their drive strong though with Denham Springs’ Cedric Polk showed up with a big tackle for loss putting Woodlawn on their own 2 yard line to close the 1st quarter.

To start the 2nd quarter Woodlawn is able to pick up 2 firsts with a catch from Darius Jackson and a run from quarterback Cayden Randall. And once again after a strong start Woodlawn’s drive was brought to an abrupt stop off two incompletions and an unsuccessful run forcing a 3rd Woodlawn punt on the day. On the punt, returner Tanner Koerner would bring the ball all the way to Woodlawn’s 25 yard line. With this field position Denham Springs would run the ball 3 times to Brenton Paul giving the Hornets 4th and short. With this Denham Springs elects to run to Hayden Ray who picks up the first down fighting tooth and nail for each yard. Denham Springs after the first would put the ball back into Hayden’s hands at the goal line where he runs in for a touchdown putting the score at 14-0 Denham Springs. On an essential drive for Woodlawn they play conservative throwing 3 short passes that don’t pick up a first. Woodlawn prepare to go for it on fourth but are unable to snap the ball before time runs out giving them a delay of game forcing them to prepare to punt once more. But the mistakes would compound as an errant snap on the punt puts Denham Springs on Woodlawn’s 18 yard line. With this Denham Springs would pick up a quick first with Brenton Paul. But, a holding call on Denham Springs gives the Woodlawn defense the momentum to stop the drive in the red zone forcing Denham Springs to only score a field goal making the score 17-0 Denham Springs. When Woodlawn gets the ball they immediately go three and out as the Denham springs defense is suffocating with Woodlawn’s routes covered and the QB under constant pressure. With this momentum the Denham Springs offense starts out rolling with back to back first down runs from Brenton Paul. After this Hayden Ray is able to fight for a first with Woodlawn needing 3 defenders to finally take him down. Denham Springs would follow up with another pass to WR Mathew Devall who makes a great sideline catch to put them in scoring position. And with this position the hornets do exactly that as QB Da’Jean Goldman runs for 15 yards to score a touchdown making the score 24-0 by halftime.
Starting the 3rd Woodlawn would try to switch it up on their opening drive alternating their quarterbacks based off the plays. Unfortunately for them though this would make no change as they still can’t pick up a first in 3 plays. Then, the panthers attempted to run the ball on 4th down but where stopped at the line of scrimmage causing a turnover on downs. With the ball, Denham Springs begins their drive with a quick first down off a catch from Trey Seals and a Brenton Paul run. But, Woodlawn’s Tyrus Gurney is able to pick up a tackle for loss on a second Brenton Paul run. This is then compounded by Denham Springs fumbling their next snap resulting in a Woodlawn recovery. With this though Woodlawn is at their own goal line and after being unable to pick up a first they have to prepare to punt. The snap for the punt though is high causing the ball to roll out the endzone resulting in a safety making the score 26-0 Denham Springs. But, the Denham Springs drive is short lived and they are forced to punt the ball for the first time on the day. In return, Woodlawn is still unable to get a drive going and turns the ball over on a 4th down incompletion. In response to this Denham Springs runs the ball to Brenton Paul who scores a 33 yard touchdown run that makes the score 33-0 Denham Springs. With the ball Woodlawn tries to establish a run game on their first 2 downs. When they drop back to pass on the 3rd though Denham Springs’ Jordan Bradley and Darreyus Scott sack the quarterback forcing a punt to end the 3rd.
In the 4th quarter both teams began to clear their benches as the game’s outcome became apparent. Denham Springs would run the ball out for half the clock with running back Enzo Laundry picking up 3 first downs giving the hornets scoring position. Despite this, Denham Springs would end up missing the field goal with them going scoreless on the drive. Woodlawn would also then run the clock out making a few short passes. Both teams go scoreless for the fourth and the game ends at 33-0 Denham Springs.
Sometimes you got to play complementary football to where if one side is struggling the others got to bow up. And I think the defense did just that tonight, really proud of the way they handled their business.
