Colonels Win in Overtime Against Stephen F. Austin!

Thibodaux, LA: The Colonels are back home after a tough loss to McNeese State last weekend.  This Saturday, Nicholls State hosted the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks.  A special set of uniforms was dedicated to first responders and volunteer firefighters as the Colonels wore all red uniforms against the Lumberjacks.

Things got off to a rough start for the Colonels as Stephen F. Austin found the end zone on their first drive down the field.  Joshawa West caught a beautiful lob pass from Zach Conque to put the first points on the board for the game.

Shortly afterwards, Chase Fourcade threw an interception on their opening drive deep in their own territory.  Conque punched through the line 3 plays later to put the Lumberjacks up 2 touchdowns early in the 1st Quarter.

The Colonels began to find a rhythm thanks to a beautiful pass from Chase Fourcade to put the offense deep into Lumberjack territory.  CJ Okpalobi powered through on the next play to score the 1st Colonel touchdown of the day and bringing the score to 14-7 with Stephen F. Austin still holding the lead.

A late interception by Christian Boutte in the 2nd Quarter sparked the Colonels offense as they later found the end zone.  Chase Fourcade used his linemen efficiently before scrambling in for the touchdown to tie the game at 14-14 before halftime.

The Colonels kept the momentum up as they found room to pass against the Lumberjack secondary.  Fourcade found Okpalobi on a 36-yard touchdown reception that showed some great speed and footwork by Okpalobi.  The Colonels go up 21-14 in the 3rd Quarter.

The Lumberjacks responded shortly afterwards with a 49-yard bomb from Conque that was good for a touchdown.  The extra point conversion was good bringing the game back to a 21-21 tie.

Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the game before heading into overtime.  Nicholls won the coin toss and elected to defend first.  However, Zach Conque proved too much to handle with his big frame and power running as he punched through for a touchdown putting the Lumberjacks ahead in overtime 28-21.

The Colonels responded with a touchdown pass on their 1st play with Fourcade hooking up with Damion Jeanpiere on a snazzy 30-yard reception.  McKey made the extra point conversion leveling the game back to 28-28.

Chase Fourcade scored his 2nd rushing touchdown of the day on the next drive.  The Colonels used their play-calling ability and dual-threat quarterback to their advantage as they ran the ball on the opposition’s 1-yard line.  McKey once again made the extra point conversion to put the Colonels ahead 35-28.

The Lumberjacks fumbled the ball on the next drive and Allen Pittman was able to recover the ball for Nicholls sealing the game and the win for the Colonels.  Up next, Nicholls State will be traveling to Houston Baptist next week at 7PM.
