For the first time since 2022, the Catholic High Bears were able to defeat the U-High Cubs 28-14 to move to 3-0 on the season.

“For us, it came down to how motivate we are going to be to just be ourselves tonight. At the end of the day, that’s what we were able to do.”

Catholic HC Hudson Fuller

The Bears were able to jump out in front early in the second quarter and never looked back as they controlled the flow of the entire game.

“We went a lot of tempo tonight. It was critical to be able to start drives well and I thought we did a great job of that. Discipline is what we played all week and we didn’t want to limit big plays. You don’t limit big plays like we did tonight without playing disciplined football. So a great job by them. The sky’s the limit for that group, and we’ve gotta keep getting better.”

The stars were out in front with each team having a headliner recruit on their team with U-High having five star LSU commit Lamar Brown and Catholic High having five star Ohio State commit Blaine Bradford.

The Bears also have a great running back coming up for the 2027 class in RB Jayden Miles, who ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries while also throwing a touchdown pass making his best Tim Tebow impersonation with a jump pass to Hayes Schramm for the third touchdown of the game.

As Coach Fuller mentioned earlier, the Bears ran a lot of up tempo and methodically moved the ball down the field. The deep running back rotation of Miles, Justin Batiste, and Lamond Robinson were constantly moving the chains while the quarterback duo of Baylor Graves and Turner Goldsmith were complementing each other with Graves having a rushing touchdown himself during the game.

The Cubs had one turnover which was an interception from Taylor Goldsmith and held the Cubs out of the end zone for the majority of the game until late when Ethan McGlynn connected with Charlie Pettit for two touchdowns towards the end.

“We really focused on just making this another game. They see us as their Super Bowl and we just see games as games. We came in here and we know the past results. We use this as fuel, but it was just fuel to the fire.”

It was a game that could have been more lopsided than what it was at the end as the Bears had two promising opening drives before turning the ball over on downs to start the game. A balanced offensive attack and a stifling defense has been the key for the Bears’ red hot 3-0 start, which already includes wins against Destrehan and St. Thomas More.

“When you beat the best in the state, it gives you a lot of confidence. You see the best and it just allows you to play confident, fast, and hard.”

The Catholic High Bears will like to improve to 4-0 next week against West Monroe while the U-High Cubs fall to 1-2 to start the season and will look to even their record at 2-2 against Collegiate next week.
