DITR: 2027 QB Michael Lange Vinton High School (Vinton, LA)

We would like to welcome our next Diamond In The Rough to Gridiron, Michael Lange, a 6-foot, 175-pound Class of 2027 Quarterback out of Vinton High School. He has a 3.5 GPA going into his senior year of high school. He recently attended the Rosepine Gridiron Football camp, where he performed well enough to be selected into the 2026 Gridiron All-American Bowl game at the end of the year. He is a two-way playmaker with elite skills on both sides of the ball. As a quarterback, he can run around, extend plays, and very often run it himself for many yards. As a defensive back, he has great instincts, can track the ball easily, and is downhill. He hits hard every time he leans towards the ball carrier. Lately, he has been thinking about playing for Louisiana Tech, but his dream college is Oregon because he loves all the colors and different jerseys they wear.

Here is my conversation with Michael Lange:

What has your football journey been like? At what age did you start playing football, and what inspired you to play football?

Ever since I was young, I kind of always had a ball in my hands, so I probably started at around six years old. I started really getting into it and watching it, and yeah, I always just had a ball in my hands like even when I was a little baby in my crib and before I could walk like, my crib had a football in it. Ever since my dad put a ball in my crib, I kind of just took to it.

Who have been some of the biggest influences in your journey? Family members, coaches, etc?

My grandpa used to coach at Merryville High School, so I would go sit on the sidelines with him, go into the locker room with him, and go into the halftime locker room. I just grew up around the game.

How would you describe the football culture at your school, community, and in Louisiana?

Ever since I started going here, it just feels like football is just different from any other sport. Football is unique in this community for bringing more people together during games better than any other sport.

Do you have a core memory of playing as a little kid, like when you first started playing?

When I was younger, we had a Super Bowl game, and I remember we lost to the team we were playing in the championship, and we came back that same year and beat that team by a touchdown. I scored that touchdown. It felt amazing. I loved it.

Do you prefer playing quarterback or safety?

I love playing quarterback, and I love scoring touchdowns, but there’s something about being at safety, coming downhill, and hitting somebody.

Was playing quarterback something you always wanted to do, or did you have another position in mind at first?

When I was younger, I thought I would be a running back, and then the quarterback moved up a year, so they just put the best player there. Once I started throwing a football, I realized I was good at it, so I just fell in love with it.

What’s something about your game that you think separates you from other players at your position?

I feel like most quarterbacks are just staying in the pocket and throwing. I can definitely escape the pocket and run around to find a way to make a throw.

What part or parts of your game do you feel like have improved the most over the years, and what would you like to improve on?

I definitely have a strong arm, and I’m definitely good at making the right reads, but I can always be better. I think I can improve at making those correct reads, and I’m very mobile, so it helps a lot.

Walk me through your preparation during a typical game day.

I get out of school, and I go home and get something to eat, but make sure it’s very light on my stomach, not too heavy. I get to school and put some music in my ears to lock in, then we start our walkthroughs, go through special teams and all that, get ready for the game, get dressed and everything, get out there, and it’s game time. In terms of any pregame rituals, not really, I just listen to music.

What were some of the toughest challenges you faced over the years of playing thus far?

I have been injured a few times, nothing really too major, but the only major thing that I ever had was that I broke my wrist one time in a game, and I had to sit out the next game, and that wasn’t very fun. I came back after that, though, and no more injuries. No surgery needed. Just put a cast on it.

What was the most memorable game you played, and why did it stand out?

Definitely the district championship. We were down a touchdown with 23 seconds left, threw a touchdown, scored, and then we got a two-point conversion, which sealed the game.

How would you describe yourself as a leader to your teammates?

I definitely see myself in a major leadership role because I feel like all the guys look up to me and depend on me. They depend on me in clutch situations, and they know we are going to get it done.

When people look back at your high school career, what do you hope they say about you as a player and person?

I want everybody to say that Michael understood where I was coming from; I want them to say that Michael always knew where I would be in his shoes.

Did you play any other sports when you were younger, or do you do any others now?

I played baseball and basketball when I was younger.

What about family members? Did they do any sports?

My mom played basketball in college, and then my dad did football and track at Southern University.

What was the Rosepine Gridiron Football camp experience like?

I was definitely in a good place to get my name out there; I just needed somewhere to go and get recognition from colleges or anyone, but the camp really helped.

What were some of your biggest takeaways from it? What is something you learned the most?

Before I went to the camp, I didn’t know what a T step was, and now I know I will definitely be using that tactic going forward; it’s way better than just coming downhill, and it really helps.

How did it feel when your name was called for an invitation to the Gridiron All-American Bowl Game?

I was definitely excited. I didn’t even know how to react, and I was kind of just mind-blown when it happened.

What has the recruitment process been like for you? Any offers? Are you getting in contact with any college coaches?

Yeah, I have been in contact with coaches from D1, D2, D3, all of that. It’s been really fun; it will be a different week, different coach.

Is there a specific college or colleges you have in mind that you want to play for?

Lately, I’ve been thinking about Louisiana Tech, but I’ve been wanting to go to Oregon. I love their jerseys and the colors they wear, and I have been wanting to go there since I was little.

In terms of a smaller college that I could start off at and then work my way up, I would probably say McNeese, LCU, or Millsaps.

Why do you believe you can be a difference maker wherever you end up?

Wherever I go, I feel like I am going to win. I am a true leader, and I know I will do whatever it takes to help my team win football games.
