Senior Bowl recap: Who stood out giving them an advantage for the NFL Combine

The 2026 Senior Bowl delivered a week of competitive practices and a defense‑tilted game that ultimately showcased several emerging NFL prospects. The American Team defeated the National Team 17–9 in frigid conditions, with wind chills in the upper teens, making it one of the coldest Senior Bowls in more than a decade. Despite the weather and a notable number of late‑week opt‑outs, the event still featured over 100 draft‑eligible players seeking one final on‑field impression before the NFL Combine.

The story of the week, and the game, was LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who entered as the most polished passer in attendance and left as the game’s MVP. Nussmeier completed 5 of 8 passes for 57 yards and added a rushing touchdown, leading scoring drives on the American Team’s first two possessions. His calm command of the offense, accuracy in tight windows, and ability to process quickly reaffirmed his status as a rising draft prospect after he struggled with injuries his senior year.

Scouts praised Nussmeier’s consistency throughout practices, noting that he separated himself from a quarterback group that otherwise struggled with rhythm and decision‑making.

While quarterback play was uneven outside of Nussmeier, the week belonged to several other position groups, most notably the running backs. Indiana’s Kaelon Black flashed burst and balance, finishing with 45 rushing yards and contributing as a receiver. His ability to create yards after contact stood out in a game where sustaining offensive rhythm was hard.

Defensively, the American Team set the tone early, forcing two first‑half turnovers that helped build a 17–0 lead. Their front seven consistently disrupted the National Team’s timing, collapsing pockets, and limiting explosive plays. Pittsburgh linebacker Kyle Louis drew praise for his range and instincts, showing he could be an every‑down defender at the next level. The National Team mounted a late push, scoring nine fourth‑quarter points, but never seriously threatened the outcome.

The week wasn’t without its challenges. Thirty players who practiced on Thursday did not participate in Saturday’s game, and 36 left the event early after weigh‑ins due to injuries or agent guidance. Still, for those who stayed, the Senior Bowl once again served as a pivotal proving ground. Prospects like Nussmeier, Black, and Louis used the spotlight to elevate their draft stock, while others left Mobile with questions to answer at the Combine.

In all, the 2026 Senior Bowl reinforced its reputation as a critical evaluation checkpoint where one where standout performances can reshape draft narratives and propel players into the national conversation.
