I recently just interviewed Head Coach Dale Weiner for Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, LA. Coach Weiner had a few things to say about his team and a few of his players that stand out this year on the Bear’s Roster.
So far, so good. We are currently 5-0 on the season as we prepare for our 1st District Game against East Ascension.
I think the work ethic of our team is our strongest Characteristic. We have a group that embraces hard work and it has paid dividends for them.
I think every team can find something they need to execute better in all phases of the game. One thing that has kept us from being as proficient offensively as we could be is a rash of injuries. We’ve had 5 different Offensive starting units in 5 games. Avoiding injuries is one area where we need to improve.
This is a pretty tight knit group. I think they genuinely care for each other and push each other to do well in practice, workouts, etc.
Name Height Weight Position Year
1) Clyde Edwards-Helaire 5’8 195 RB Sr.
Comments: A very patient runner with great down field acceleration, Edwards-Helaire was a huge contributor to the offense for the Catholic High Bears. He really understands the importance of running behind his offensive line and picking the right moment to explode through the line with his acceleration. Keep an eye on this offensive prospect who can also break off from a reception in the backfield.
2) Ben Miles 6’1 225 FB/H Sr.
Comments: Miles was a key factor for setting up the run for teammate Edwards-Helaire. He is capable of lining up in a traditional TE set, Fullback, or Halfback. The multi purpose back usually lines up in the Fullback position and is an excellent blocker downfield. He also lines up in a single back setting and is nearly averaging 5.9 yards per carry.
3) Zach Tom 6’3 285 OT Sr.
Comments: Zach Tom is a physical and aggressive player. It was truly entertaining to watch this man play as he physically put his competition on the ground. Not afraid to get up in their face, Tom likes to get up and personal in the opposition’s face. He has great usage with his hands as an offensive lineman.
4) Tre’ Square 6’3 240 DE Sr.
Comments: Very capable of using his athletic skills to get through the offensive line and getting to the quarterback. Tre’ is quick and knows how to break off of blockers well to get to the ball carrier. He really has an instinct at getting to the point of breakdown.
5) Chris Cameron 6’4 230 TE Sr.
Comments: Cameron is mostly utilized as a pass-catching tight end who uses his hands very well at catching the ball. He is very smart in his route running and effective at getting big chunks of yardage. When needed to, he is also good at blocking but the offense mostly utilizes him for his hands and route running.
