Pope John Paul II High School in Slidell, LA has not fared too well in the last few seasons but the 2016-17 season has brought renewed spirit with the hiring of new coach Brett Bonnaffons. Immediately upon his hiring Coach Bonnaffons named senior David Doane the starter at quarterback. Doane is a solid 5’10’’ 190lb dual threat qb who is equally skilled at running and passing. In his limited time last year he showed flashes of the type of play that Coach Bonnaffons believes will translate to multiple wins and success for the Jaguars this year. Through the first 6 games of the season the PJP Jaguars have been able to win 2 district games (first time in 3 years to win a single district game) behind the passing (1200 yards, 10 touchdowns) and running (400 yards, 8 touchdowns) of David Doane. The jaguar offense has come to life averaging 24 points a game this year compared to 4 points a game last year and 7 points a game the year before. Doane has led an explosive offense that has the jaguars in every game with the chance to win. Expectations have risen to the point where even the New Orleans Advocate has picked PJP to win twice this year through the first 6 games. David Doane was named the Offensive Player of the week by the New Orleans Advocate for his 6 total touchdown performance in a win over Springfield on 23 Sep 16. Doane was 7-10 for 203 yards and 4 touchdowns while also rushing for 72 yards and 2 more scores. Doane was also named the Northshore Male Athlete of the Week by NOLA.Com for 7 Oct 16 following his 117 yard 1 touchdown passing and 102 yard rushing with 2 touchdowns in a victory over Northlake Christian. PJP had not beaten Northlake Christian in the last 5 years with this win giving PJP a 2-0 district record for the first time in many years. These two wins doubled the win total for the previous year and tied the wins for the last two years.
