The Lane Kiffin drama has finally come to an end as Kiffin has made his decision and that is becoming the next head coach of the LSU Tigers after six seasons leading the Ole Miss Rebels.
After originally announcing that he would make his decision on Saturday, that looming thought would linger into Sunday. There were plenty of hours in doubt as Kiffin met with Ole Miss university officials a day after their Egg Bowl win, but as the night went on, it became more and more clear that Kiffin was leaning towards being the coach at LSU.
What was the driving force of the meeting was whether or not Kiffin would be able to lead the Rebels during the College Football Playoff even though he has denied the Ole Miss contact extension offer and will be taking a rival school’s job.
After both Kiffin and Carter left the Ole Miss chancellor’s home at 6:45 PM last night, it was also announced that LSU executives and Lane Kiffin’s reps held a call after LSU’s loss to Oklahoma to continue solidifying an offer that is worth approximately over $90 million plus $25 million in roster building. That deal makes Kiffin the highest paid coach in the country. According to Yahoo Sports, LSU would send two planes to Oxford for Kiffin, his family, and others to make the deal official.
A team meeting that originally was scheduled for 9 was moved to 1 pm to inform the team that he is leaving for LSU.
With a 116-53 overall record as a head coach at four different stops at the collegiate level including Tennessee, USC, FAU, and Ole Miss, it was in Oxford that Kiffin had his most successful run leading the Rebels to three straight 10+ winning seasons including in 2025. Known as one of the best offensive play callers in college football, he helped the Rebels clinch a College Football Playoff berth with a DII quarterback transfer from Ferris State in Trinidad Chambliss.
During his time in Oxford, he has also developed quarterbacks like Matt Corral and Jaxson Dart while his offenses have been ranked Top 10 in the country five of the six years.
Prior to that, he led Florida Atlantic to having a Top 10 offense in the country while leading the Owls to two conference championships. His renaissance as a coach started when he went to Alabama as the offensive coordinator under Nick Saban where he developed quarterbacks like Blake Sims and Jalen Hurts en route to a national championship appearance.
The son of former college and NFL defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin had a rocky start as a head coach with failed stunts with the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Volunteers, and the USC Trojans, but now, is highly regarded as one of the best coaches in college football.
In a year which LSU has failed to score more than 25 points against any FBS opponent, Kiffin would certainly bring an exciting offense back to Baton Rouge. Before the firing of Brian Kelly, LSU’s previous three head coaches have all won national championships and Kiffin wants the opportunity to add his name to the list.
It is a new era of LSU football as the Lane Train has made its arrival to Baton Rouge!
