Ascension Catholic brought North Iberville’s undefeated run to an end in this game in which Ascension Catholic’s defense held Iberville to a single digit score until the fourth.
North Iberville started the game with the ball and immediately got off on the wrong foot with Catholic’s defensive line forcing consecutive losses of yardage that would cause a three and out to start the game. With the ball Ascension Catholic played very safe by running the ball up the middle to Trevin Simon who would march them down the field. After a few short runs they were able to break away for a gain of around 20 on the run by quarterback Greg Fernandez. After this they were able to score by giving the ball back to Trevin Simon who would run for a 12 yard touchdown putting the score at 7-0 with Ascension Catholic leading. North Iberville would start off with the ball on the opposing 40 yard line after a strong return. They were unable to take advantage of this field position however as they would fumble the ball on the first play of their drive putting the football back in Ascension Catholic’s hands. With the ball they continued their strategy of running the ball down the middle except they used Josh Barber who has plenty of size as he’s also a defensive lineman. This would get them in scoring position where they decided to give the ball back to Trevin Simon who would score his second touchdown this quarter putting Ascension Catholic up 14-0.
North Iberville started the second quarter with the ball and began by giving the ball to Jeremy Favorite off a pass and a run that would force a third down that was converted by quarterback Justice Roy on a run. This would be the last first down converted this drive though as North Iberville would throw back to back incompletions on third and fourth downs causing a turnover on downs. With the ball Ascension Catholic would attempt to continue their running offense but couldn’t truly get any big gains. Alongside this a big tackle for loss by Jaylen Mims would force Ascension Catholic’s first punt on the day. Iberville would start off firing with the ball as a pass to Jeremy Favorite would gain 30 yards on their first play. But, a big tackle for loss by Karson Folse for Ascension Catholic would cause North Iberville to be put in a ditch that they where unable to escape forcing a punt. Ascension Catholic however couldn’t get their offense started and immediately give the ball back to North Iberville off a punt. With the ball, North Iberville was able to break away for a massive 40 yard gain off a pass to Aiden Melancon. This must have offended the Ascension Catholic defense in some way as shortly after Vaugh Blanchard would force a fumble for them that they would recover. However, with this momentum they were still unable to score and end up punting the ball who would run the rest of the time in the quarter out.
Ascension Catholic would start the third quarter with the ball at midfield off a good return from Cy Landry. Unfortunately they don’t take advantage of this and punt the ball early in the third. This wouldn’t hurt them though as Vaughn Blanchard is able to get an interception that he ran to the goal line and pitched the ball to a teammate who would score a touchdown thus making the score 22-0 off a successful 2-point conversion. Iberville with the ball started off with incompletions for their first 2 plays of their drive and on the third would get sacked by Catholic’s Chris Anthens causing North Iberville to punt. They would quickly get the ball back as they where able to force a fumble on an inside run by Ascension Catholic. With the ball once again North Iberville would drive down the field by heavily targeting Aiden Melancon. Then, once it was time to score they gave the ball to his brother Bra’jon Melancon who would score their first touchdown putting the score at 8-22 Ascension Catholic. After receiving the ball Ascension Catholic would start at a deficit as Bra’jon Melancon picked up a tackle for loss. In response they threw a 50 yard touchdown pass to Cy Landry putting them up 30-8. North Iberville receives the ball and goes three and out so they punt the ball. Once Ascension Catholic received the ball they ran to Trevin Simon who would run for a 30 yard gain to end the quarter.
Ascension Catholic would end their drive at the start of the fourth quarter with a touchdown run to Josh Barber that would make the score 37-8 their way. North Iberville would quickly respond though as they scored a touchdown on their return on a lateral to Bra’jon Melancon putting the score at 37-14 Catholic winning. Ascension Catholic would return the ball around midfield due to a failed onside kick from Iberville. In this position they run the ball constantly to Josh Barber who would drive them down the field and into the redzone. This is where Trevin Simon subs into the game to run for a touchdown putting Ascension Catholic up 44-14. With the ball Iberville is once again able to respond quickly with Jeremy Favorite breaking away for a 60 yard touchdown catch making the score 44-22 Ascension Catholic leading. Ascension Catholic receives the ball and continues running the ball to their backfield of Simon and Barber where they continue to succeed. This success would continue as they would punch the ball in for another score putting them up 50-22. Then, in the last few seconds of the game Jeremy Favorite is able to break away for another 40+ yard gain this time on a run scoring the last points of the game ending at a 28-50 Ascension Catholic win.
We talked about it all week. Our defense is gonna have to step up for us to win games. We looked for them to have a big step forward in growth this week. We looked for them to have a big step forward in execution and those guys did it man they stepped up big time. It was a huge game by those guys, a big game for our defense and that’s what won the football game for us.
