SLU Opens Southland Play with 45-31 Victory over UTRGV

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team racked up a season-high 540 total yards on the way to a 45-31 victory over UTRGV in the Southland Conference opener for both teams Saturday evening in Strawberry Stadium.

Southeastern (3-2, 1-0 SLC) improved to 13-8 in Southland Conference openers with Saturday’s win. The visiting Vaqueros (4-1, 0-1 SLC) suffered their first loss in the program’s inaugural season.

“We had some great moments tonight, especially offensively,” Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo said. “But we were too sloppy and made some disappointing mistakes that allowed the game to be closer than it should’ve been.”

With Carson Camp (10-for-13, 130 yards, 2 TD) and Kyle Lowe (10-for-12, 122 yards, 1 TD) splitting time under center, SLU had its most balanced day offensively, accounting for a season-high 288 yards rushing and 252 through the air.

Deantre Jackson led the Lions with 121 yards rushing and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Lowe rushed for a season-high 92 yards and a score on nine totes. Jackson was the first Southeastern player to top 100 yards rushing this season.

SLU also had its first 100-plus yard receiving performance of the season, as Jaylon Domingeaux hauled in seven passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. Kentrell Prejean and Adyn Wilkinson each had receiving touchdowns for the Lions.

Khamron Ford led the Southeastern defense with seven tackles, as he, Kaleb Proctor and Joshua Randall each were credited with sacks. Ian Conerly-Goodly recorded his first interception of the season, while Zach Johnson led the Lions with three pass breakups.

Eddie Lee Marburger handled the majority of the quarterbacking duties for UTRGV, finishing 16-for-29 for 218 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Tony Diaz was the top target in the passing game for the Vaqueros, finishing with four catches for 113 yards and a score.

Southeastern jumped out to a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter and held a 28-10 lead at halftime. SLU extended its lead to 42-17 after three quarters, before UTRGV outscored the Lions, 14-3, in the final quarter to trim into the final margin.

SLU will now open the road portion of its Southland Conference schedule. The Lions will head to McNeese (1-4, 0-1 SLC) for a 6 p.m. contest Saturday in Lake Charles. The contest versus the Cowboys will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 97.7 FM/WFPR 1400 AM).
