Abramson Sci Academy has a fresh leadership chapter as Gilbert “Gil” Chartian steps in as head coach for the Commodores after serving as longtime defensive coordinator, most recently at Carver High School. Inheriting a program that went 2‑8 last season, Chartian isn’t settling for mediocrity, his goal is far bigger. He brings a “Superdome vision,” aiming not merely for a few wins, but deep playoff runs and district supremacy.
From the moment he arrived, Chartian says he’s been met with open arms, players, staff, and administration alike embracing the changes. He’s installing new offensive and defensive schemes, prioritizing culture, toughness, and consistent effort. With a young roster (only six seniors), there’s room to grow, experiment, and build toward long‑term success.
Second‑season stud Jaheim Butler is a cornerstone, four‑year starter, ball hawk in the secondary, and will also carry the offense as running back. Under center is sophomore Charles Henry, a dual threat QB expected to deliver to several receivers, including three‑year starter Christopher Joseph, Jamari Corbitt, Thomas Poche, Terrill Johnson, and running back Jacobi Corbitt. Blocking for them will be a mammoth front led by juniors Jayden Clark, Eric Brock, veterans Trent Williams, and new starters Ernest Perkins and Jordan Lucien.
Defensively, Chartian plans aggression from the first whistle. The secondary is expected to be a strength, with Butler joined by promising freshmen Mekhi Breaux and James Burris. Outside linebacker Makhi Allen returns for his 3rd starting season and is one of the team’s vocal leaders. Up front, Joshua Hayes and Darnell Norwood will anchor the line, while Wesley Norwood, Landon Russell, and Reginald Gordan take leadership roles in the linebacker corps.
The Commodores’ 2025 schedule includes Sarah T. Reed, Collegiate B.R., Varnado, Fisher, Crescent City, McDonogh 35, Carver, Frederick Douglass, Eleanor McMain, and The Willow School. It’s a challenging slate, but one Chartian welcomes. With his long‑term mindset and belief in this group, expectations are rising. This isn’t rebuilding—it’s preparing. And yes, Abramson Sci Academy is dreaming Superdome big.
