LSU Fall Practice #16 Report: Carius Curne Gets 1st Team Reps At Right Tackle, Star LB Out, And More!

After a scrimmage on Saturday in Tiger Stadium and a day off on Sunday, we got the first 15 minutes of practice and there was a lot to take notice.

The first big area of notice was that there was a shakeup on the first team offensive line as five star freshman Carius Curne was taking first team reps at right tackle during the team’s hurry up period and scout team period. For the most part, the offensive line remained unchanged throughout the course of fall camp with the occasional battle between Paul Mubenga and DJ Chester at left guard. This was a big changeup two weeks before the start of the season to have a true freshman getting first team reps at right tackle. Weston Davis eventually got first team reps later on in the 15 minutes. With Curne at right tackle, the first team offense had Tyree Adams at left tackle, Paul Mubenga at left guard, Braelin Morre at center, and Josh Thompson at right guard. The second team offensive line featured Ory Williams, Bo Bordelon, DJ Chester, Coen Echols, and Weston Davis.

Garrett Nussmeier was also not wearing a brace at practice, which is a great sign as we approach closer to the season.

Along with the offensive line shakeup, there was a big headline on the defensive side of the football as star linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. was not at practice today. There is no explanation why Perkins was not at practice, but we should get an explanation from Brian Kelly tomorrow during his media availability. While one star linebacker was absent from practice, the Tigers’ other star linebacker Whit Weeks was watching practice from the sidelines in tennis shoes and no pads with his jersey. He was watching the first team defense line up against the scout team offense near the end zone.

With the linebackers out, guys like West Weeks, Davhon Keys, Tylen Singleton, and Zach Weeks were able to get those first team reps at linebacker. Meanwhile, Jardin Gilbert was getting reps at STAR, which is the normal position for Harold Perkins Jr. The first team defense included DT Dominick McKinley, DT Jacobian Guillory, DE Jack Pybyrn, DE Gabriel Reliford, CB Mansoor Delane, CB PJ Woodland, S Tamarcus Cooley, and S AJ Haulcy.

The second team defense included DT Bernard Gooden, DT Ahmad Breaux, DE Patrick Payton, DE Jimari Butler, STAR CJ Jimcoily, CB DJ Pickett, CB Ashton Stamps, S Dashawn Spears, and S Javien Toviano.

One more interesting note from Monday’s practice was that Michael Van Buren had a splint on his hand and took a lot of mental reps with Colin Hurley leading the second team offense.

The final time we will get a practice report will be after a special Saturday night scrimmage in Tiger Stadium. For more LSU content, make sure to go to www.gridironfootballusa.com!
