Today, the media got only an hour of media availability at LSU practice today. There was not a whole lot to point out, but we did see a couple of notable things.
For the most part, the LSU offense struggled today, but the biggest highlight came when there was a 11v11 red zone period in which Garrett Nussmeier rifled in a touchdown pass over the middle to Zavion Thomas, who caught the pass in heavy traffic. That was pretty much as good as it went for the offense.
After scoring, the first team offense would work from its own end zone. Ahmad Breaux went into the backfield to make a tackle on Caden Durham for a short gain. Then, Nussmeier would find Nic Anderson for a four yard pickup. On third down, Nussmeir roled to the outside where Ashton Stamps made a nice pass breakup on Aaron Anderson.
The second team offense could not get anything going against the first team defense in the red zone. Harold Perkins made a nice tackle for loss in the backfield. Then, Michael Van Buren motioned out which put Ju’Juan Johnson in taking the direct snap. Illegal motion was called on the play.
The next play, Van Buren tried to hit Trey’Dez Green, but missed the throw. What followed was a disaster as Kaleb Jackson went in to take the direct snap. The ball hit his face mask and Mansoor Delane was able to scoop the loose football for a 90 yard touchdown.
Things did not go better for the second team offense from working deep as West Weeks stopped Ju’Juan Johnson at the line of scrimmage. Van Buren had a couple of short scrambles and then Van Buren threw an incomplete pass that was intended for Trey’Dez Green.
As far as 7v7 goes, Garrett Nussmeier finished 5 for 8 with the biggest highlight being a 20 yard pass to Aaron Anderson with the others being dump off passes to the running backs. Michael Van Buren finished 2 for 4. Offensive coordinator Joe Sloan was upset with Van Buren during the drill after making the wrong read. Finally, Colin Hurley completed 4 of 5 passes and had a really nice throw to Trey’Dez Green over the middle of the field.
Usually, the wide receivers would dominate in this drill, but today was won by the defense during 7v7 play. Tamarcus Cooley, DJ Pickett, Mansoor Delane, and Davhon Keys all had pass breakups, but there were a lot of drops too during the session, which is rare from this group by Caden Durham, Kyle Parker, and TaRon Francis.
There has been a consistent theme the last couple of practices during 11v11 play that the defenses have overall won the battle, but the offense still comes away with making one to two splash plays. One note to make from today was that DJ Chester was back starting at left guard after Paul Mubenga was taking starting snaps on Monday.
The next time, we will have media availability on Friday. We will have practice analysis, another Chase With Jace episode, and practice highlights then so make sure to go to www.gridironfootballusa.com for more scoop on the Tigers!
