Today, the media got a chance to take a look at another practice as the LSU Tigers begin their third week of fall practice. Once again, a lot of eyers were on Garrett Nussmeier, who for the second practice in a row, had a sleeve on his leg. Still, Nussmeier was a full go at practice and looked fine. He made a lot of great throws during 7v7 and 11v11 and even ran for a nice gain during 11v11 play.
Aaron Anderson was also a full go today and was not wearing a sleeve, which is also good news for Tigers fans. The only injured player from today is Ja’Keem Jackson, who was dealing with a hamstring injury and was working from the sidelines today.
With the recent news of JT Lindsey being suspended from the team, Ju’Juan Johnson is making the transition at running back since the Tigers now have three scholarship running backs on the roster. Johnson’s versatility puts the running back room in a good standing with his speed and his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.
Before going to outside, the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and defensive backs were working 1v1 drills in the end zone. Trey’Dez Green was unstoppable as he beat Harold Perkins Jr. twice once on a fade and the second on a slant. Green followed that up by catching a touchdown pass during 7v7 action. Zavion Thomas made a nice play by beating Mansor Delane on a fade as well in the end zone.
When the practice shifted outdoors, it started with a special teams period with Grant Chadwick getting the first opportunity to punt with Badger Hargett and Aeron Burrell getting opportunities to punt as well. There were multiple players that were getting reps at punt returner including Aaron Anderson, Barion Brown, Chris Hilton, Jelani Watkins, Kyle Parker, and Zavion Thomas.
Speaking of Barion Brown, the Kentucky transfer made two incredible plays with one coming indoors with a tough catch over PJ Woodland and the other being the play of the day which was a 28 yard touchdown pass from Garrett Nussmeier over Ashton Stamps. That play made it exciting for the whole offense and was a good capper for the day.
The offensive line had a little bit of a change with Paul Mubenga getting some first team reps today. The starting defense during 11v11 action had Jack Pyburn at defensive end, Bernard Gooden and Jacobian Guillory at defensive tackle, Gabriel Reliford at the other end, Davhon Keys, Whit Weeks, and Harold Perkins at linebacker, and Ashton Stamps and Mansoor Delane at cornerback and finally, Tamarcus Cooley and AJ Haulcy at safety.
LSU ended practice with a 63 yard field goal attempt from Aeron Burrell. The kick was no good, but it is clear that Burrell definitely has the leg to make those attempts.
