Zin’Tavious Smith Guides Centenary Through Midseason Challenges

As Centenary College’s football season hits its midpoint, the team sits at 2-3 overall, with a 2-1 conference record. Central to the team’s success has been the leadership and dynamic play of quarterback Zin’Tavious Smith, who has proven to be a dual-threat on the field. Smith’s contributions, along with key performances from his teammates, have kept Centenary competitive despite tough losses. With a solid foundation in place, the team looks ahead to building on their recent victory as they strive for a strong finish to the season.

Zin’Tavious Smith: A Dual-Threat Leader

Through the first five games of the season, Zin’Tavious Smith has demonstrated his versatility, both through the air and on the ground. Smith has thrown for 344 yards and five touchdowns while completing 55.6% of his passes. His longest completion, an 83-yard touchdown strike to Byron Stewart, highlighted his ability to make big plays when needed.

But it’s not just Smith’s arm that has kept Centenary’s offense moving. His 259 rushing yards, including two rushing touchdowns, make him a constant threat to break off big runs. Averaging 7.0 yards per carry, Smith’s mobility has helped the offense stay balanced and unpredictable, especially when defenses load the box to stop the run. His 41-yard run against Lyon showcased his athleticism and playmaking ability, key elements in Centenary’s offensive game plan.

Key Playmakers Stepping Up

While Smith has been the driving force behind Centenary’s offense, other players have also contributed significantly. Wide receiver Kobe Chambers has been a reliable target, leading the team with 24 receptions for 301 yards and two touchdowns. Chambers’ ability to stretch the field has opened up opportunities for other receivers like Devin Ardoin and Trent Smith, who have combined for over 200 yards receiving.

On the ground, Bobby Shanklin Jr. has supported Smith’s efforts with 150 rushing yards and a touchdown of his own. The balanced rushing attack, with Smith, Shanklin, and Josh Ware all contributing, has allowed Centenary to control the clock and keep opposing defenses guessing.

Defensive Struggles and Special Teams

Despite the offensive success, Centenary has faced challenges on the defensive side of the ball. The team has given up an average of 30.4 points per game, struggling to stop the run, as opponents have rushed for an average of 195.6 yards per game. Although individual defenders like Vance Feuerbacher and Bryan Washington have made key plays, the defense will need to tighten up if Centenary hopes to compete for a conference title.

Special teams have also been an area of mixed results, with the team converting only 16.7% of field goal attempts. However, return specialist Kobe Chambers has been a bright spot, averaging 20.1 yards per kick return, providing the offense with solid field position.

Looking Forward

As Centenary looks ahead to the second half of the season, the team will need to build on the momentum from their recent 35-14 victory over Lyon. With Zin’Tavious Smith leading the way, the offense has the potential to put up points against any opponent. If the defense can shore up its weaknesses and special teams can become more consistent, Centenary has a chance to make a strong push in the latter half of the season.
